Meta exist to make a profit, however they're never going to be able to advertise to most people in the fediverse, who also happen to be some of the most knowledgeable people in some fields. If they accept that they're never going to be able to advertise to those people, they go for the next best thing: monetising their content....
This has come to mind because all the chatter about Meta federating....
I just read this point in a comment and wanted to bring it to the spotlight....
A lot of people dislike it for the privacy nightmare that it is and feel the threat of an EEE attack. This will also probably not be the last time that a big corporation will insert itself in the Fediverse....

I have been on the edge with twitter and reddit for a while and I have finally deleted my accounts that I have had for a very long time there. They are no longer the places I used to know, even more so with twitter. I am ready for my new time here and on mastodon....
Lemmy.world grew from around 51000 total users the moment 3rd party reddit apps started to shut down on June 30 to 71000 total users at the time of this post (July 1). That's a 40% growth in about 12 hours!...
You know how people looked at the dumb decisions of #StocktonRush and said don't get in the #Titan ?...
From 2,997 active users across all lemmy instances at the beginning of June, the number increased to 52,797 by June 30th. Source....
I've spent more than 7 years in Mastodon, and in my experience, new users always come in with a Twitter mindset, then getting a cultural shock because they come to Mastodon expecting a Twitter experience and end up finding something strange and bizarre....
Was using Lemmy.ca as my home instance for a while, now it's gone. Just wondering what happened or where I can find out.

A lot of us come from reddit, so we're naturally inclined to want a reddit-like platform. However, it occurred to me that the reddit format makes little sense for the fediverse....
