I know I'm in the minority, but I just don't understand the appeal of listening to a 7 or even 12 hour generated audiobook. Never bought one, and I never will, but people keep buying these things so shrug I guess. https://goodereader.com/blog/audiobooks/how-leeanna-morgan-utilizes-ai-for-effortless-audiobook-creation @bookstodon

@weirdwriter @bookstodon I can see a place for A.I. readers to create audiobooks of things that are never going to have a proper one made of them. Old public domain stuff say. Primarily to make that material accessible to more people. But they should be sold way more cheaply than audiobooks with human narrators, as the production costs are obviously much smaller, and if something is public domain there's nobody to pay royalties to.

@beecycling @weirdwriter @bookstodon The environmental cost is too much even if the work is public domain. And the 'AI' will always have been trained on stolen content.

For that, Librivox exists, and I think the readers are fantastic! https://librivox.org/ @beecycling @bookstodon

@weirdwriter @bookstodon I hate AI generated audio of any kind, it sounds so fake. I absolutely will not listen to AI books. One thing I enjoy the most about audiobooks is the narrator's interpretation of each character and the small details they add to make listening an enjoyable experience.

@Jennifer @weirdwriter @bookstodon Right? I have spent more nights with Stephen Briggs and Nigel Planer than any other man. 😁

weirdwriter OP ,

I can't even read a full book with my screen reader. I can edit work, but reading for pleasure this way? No way! Also, so what if the narrator isn't to people's tastes? In my opinion, other authors should be releasing their work DRM free instead. @MissConstrue @Jennifer @bookstodon

Now I have to check out your audiobook crushes! Mine are, For the men, it's Jakobi Diem, Sean Crisden and Ace Bently and a few others. For the women, it's Bahni Turpin and this woman that narrates for recorded books that goes by the name Mari. I also like Wesleigh Siobhan. I have many more! @MissConstrue @Jennifer @bookstodon

@weirdwriter @Jennifer @bookstodon mine are all Terry Pratchett audiobooks. Because I know the books almost word for word, I don’t mind playing them as bedtime stories where I fall asleep. New books? Oh my, I’ll stay up all night because I don’t want to miss anything. 🤣
I actually don’t know if they’ve done any other authors, although given how very good both of them are at creating character voices, I would hope they’ve had enormous success as readers.
