Cliff, ultimate baseball genius, knew not only that Gene Bremer played for the Memphis Red Sox, but that I had asked this selfsame #1947League question back when I was doing this on the bird app. All hail CLIFF!
Johnny Mize (#1947League hero for second consecutive day), Ty Cobb, Bill Terry, Frank ('The Big Hurt") Thomas, and Josh Gibson -- all born in Georgia, and all in the Hall of Fame.
There's one more #baseball Hall of Famer from the state of Georgia. Name him.
I know I have to exempt myself from this since I’m in the text with Cliff but I totally had this one. Two Georgia born players that should be in Cooperstown are Rap Dixon and Bill Byrd.
Bremer gets the save, Taylor the win, and MIksis the GWRBI as Brooklyn's record improves to 55-34 -- tops in the league. They've overtaken the Phils (for now at least) despite three regulars being on IL.
"Miksis, you say" -- my buddy Cliff, as he texts me an image of his autographed Eddie Miksis postcard
(Spoiler alert -- he has all the autographs that ever existed or ever will exist. He did explain all this to me once. Something to do with a wormhole.)
Phils = 11th of 12 in HRs; usually a doubles-and-triples kind of offense. Not last night, though. Davis, Neil, and Bassett all went long. Groundhog Thompson (10-5) got the win.
With a .346 lifetime average, you'd think today's hero, Buck Leonard, would have a spot on the all-time BA leader board. Buck doesn't have the required plate appearances. Name the highest-ranking Black star who does...and tell me where he ranks.
Two hard-luck pitchers (Watson 4-10, 3.47 for PHI; Barnhill 3-5 3.39 for BOSR) settled in for an old-fashioned extra-inning pitcher's duel--the best kind. Watson came away with the win.
1st, Anyone else here buying the Timberwolves? I’m pretty pumped after we thrashed the Suns in 4. I expect some believers if we can knock off the Nuggets.
2nd, Twins are on a 8 game win streak.
3rd, Ruth, you’re Blue Jays are mlb.com’s free game of the day.
Giants have the 2nd-most-productive offense in #1947league, behind only Brooklyn. You wouldn't have guessed that today, though: Dan Bankhead K'd 11 and held them to 2 hits. Josh Gibson went long.
I chose Seamheads (the one that updates records more regularly, via research of old sources) bcs the top Josh Gibson batting average seemed unreal. I thought surely I'd have heard about this, that it must have been a recent discovery.
5 innings in relief today. 0R 0ER 7K 2H 3WK. Earned the W.
Hitting needs work. Went 1-5. R 2K stole home on a double steal. Had some very healthy hacks that I just missed.
ESPN.com apparently didn't get the memo about Black Leagues stats being MLB stats (not sure what's up with that) -- but if you zoom over to baseball-reference.com you'll see that the single-season batting average record belongs to #1947League's very own Tetelo Vargas.
Cliff got the answer to this, which is entertaining and which I will share as soon as possible. #1947League will return when the deadline fever passes... Say a prayer if you're so inclined! 🙂
Francis Ford Coppola and Ali McGraw prepare to give out an Oscar in 1979. One of these people wolfed down rock promoter Bill Graham's magic cookie, unaware that its most notable ingredient was #cannabis. Can you guess which one?
OK, if you're just tuning in, this thread is part of a 3-years-and-counting #baseball simulation project replaying the 1947 season fully integrated with #NegroLeagues stars of the era. (As opposed to a handful of Black players.)
By the way, if you've never heard of Red Barrett (I hadn't either, before I started #1947League), you may be interested to learn that he is the author of what may well be the single most badass start in MLB history. Curious? Details here:
3 more teams before we wrap up the team-by-team top players summary for #1947League.
While there's a break in the action, I thought it appropriate to acknowledge, to @RuthODay, Oakland's full responsibility for what happened at the Coliseum last night.
0 @YusufToropov , you have been posting quite a lot lately—baseball history, incisive political commentary, and even some surprising hubris for a currently-less-than-400 team— so I don’t expect you, 0 Yusuf, to have the time to post another game highlight link.
But please, 0 Yusuf, could you at least share with us the number of runs the A’s scored today?
I’ve said this before in this space but I think that it bears repeating. It’s just a note to help pass down some baseball lore to the youngsters out there:
Blue Jays pitcher Kevin Gausman threw the baseball for nine full innings (109 times) to achieve what is known as a “complete game”. You youngsters might see the abbreviation “CG” and wonder what that means… well, there you go!
#1947League team pitching stats. Brooklyn way out front on this one, suggesting a winning strategy from the Flatbush GM. (Brooklyn dealt Dixie Walker to the Indians for alleged spitballer Bill Byrd.)
(On a separate note, congrats to @RuthODay and their Blue Jays for winning an entertaining and downright crazy game at the Coliseum yesterday against my beloved A's.)
NY gets a quality start from Morris, outhits Pirates 10-5, but can't connect the dots in any inning until the 9th, when a two-out rally delivered too little, too late. Willard Brown's 3 doubles go to waste.
R.T. Walker gets the W for Pittsburgh; Kiner homers.
My buddy Cliff, a Baltimore fan who knows all and sees all, correctly answered: "1st off they didn't lose it was stolen. They protested and were told they forfeited for protesting. Grays"
Willard Brown (HOF) posted a jaw-dropping 5-6 day (3 2B, HR, 3R, 3 RBI) as the Yankees dominated. Starter Spud Chandler picked up his tenth win of the year. And hit a grand slam.
Big #1947League matchup today: Wilmer Fields (10-7, 2.92, .267, 11 HR, 20 2B and his Pirates take on Satchel Paige (9-7, 4.07) and the New York Yankees in the third and deciding game of their series. Let's head out to Yankee Stadium now...
Wilmer Fields played for a lot of great Homestead Grays teams ... but he didn't play for the squad that many #baseball historians now argue was the greatest of all time. Bar none. And let's have no grumbling from the also-rans. (Talking to you, '27 Yankees.)
What is the number of regular season games won by a pitcher who never threw a pitch?
(Commonly a reliever enters in the 8th inning with a runner on. The runner is picked off directly or caught in a rundown (also scored as a CS, I think)).
Closest one gets bragging rights and the middle of a doughnut!
