At first it is hard to believe that most people don't pay much attention to politics. Most people don't know what "project 24" is or the significance of the phrase "obstructing an official procedure" (maybe you are such a person) --but, when I think about how tense, nervous and occasionally helpless political news makes me feel I totally get it. Also, a lot of this stuff is boring and kind of technical.

@futurebird what would it look like to see this energy released? I dont know what I'm looking for. I get 30 emails a day from Democrats as it is and lots of it refers to project 2025. Since I'm not in a swing state, it's all fundraiser email.

@zzzeek@hachyderm.io avatar

@futurebird I think some of that may have been a product of the particular strategy Obama used in 2008 which was the 50 state strategy. Not sure if he did that as much in 2012. I think it was right for Obama because he did represent something obviously very different at the time; as president, he turned out to be in many ways a lot more "traditional" (think drones, missile strikes, etc) than people expected. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifty-state_strategy

@Shivaekul @futurebird do you live in a swing state? I think that would logically be where most of the action is now, if anywhere.

zzzeek ,
@zzzeek@hachyderm.io avatar

@futurebird then I don't really know. I am sure every candidate wants that kind of thing to happen. My only guess is that there was tons of grassroots for Obama 08 that there has never been since that maybe allowed for a much broader effort downstream to form. Otherwise....David Plouffe has some magic power noone has ever been able to replicate ? Shrugs

@ohmu @futurebird thanks for your efforts !

@futurebird oh, because you think a revved up base would become a liability.....can you expand on that ? Did that happen when Obama won in 08?

The Anti-Liberal Left Has a Fascism Problem

Prominent leftwing intellectuals are allowing their singular, disdain-driven focus on (neo-) liberalism to completely distort their perspective on the Right.

@tzimmer_history wow! I had no idea that was happening. only thriving when they are in conflict with the mainstream. Actively shunning the idea of ever being seen as cooperative against a common enemy ! Incredible

News is such a confused industry. In order for it to be successful, it needs the majority of people to find value in the news that it produces. Most people are not old, wealthy, straight, white, men, but most news stories are framed from that perspective, even when the framing is false and easily debunkable.

Most news rooms don't look anything close to the people that they need to buy their papers to have a sustainable business.

Failure is inevitable.

@DaywalkingRedhead @mekkaokereke I don't think "mainstream" has changed much. You're my age, so you were there - there were three networks, with the news for like an hour each night, and that was it. Whole universes of wrong all around the world and locally never entered our view. Certainly all the leftist / rightist content that's free flowing everywhere now, you had to learn back then by finding photocopied flyers somewhere. Ppl are upset not so much about access as they are narratives

zzzeek ,
@zzzeek@hachyderm.io avatar

@DaywalkingRedhead @mekkaokereke it's "narratives" that worry me about Tiktok in particular. The algo is secret and it's well known companies like bytedance answer to their government or face imprisonment. The narratives are tailored to individual users, impossible to analyze at a macro level, and bytedance even shuts out people who attempt to do so. It seems extremely obvious that the govt of China is actively using this to sway our internal politics

zzzeek ,
@zzzeek@hachyderm.io avatar

@mekkaokereke @DaywalkingRedhead it's unfortunate that some of the nations adversarial to the US fall under the umbrella where "well we can't be sure if this is real or just racism". Nations like Russia, Iran, and China are considered by the US government to be adversarial to US interests. So there is a sin here common to all of them, which is "nationalism". So yes, I do favor US interests over those of adversarial nations.

zzzeek ,
@zzzeek@hachyderm.io avatar

@mekkaokereke @DaywalkingRedhead however, certainly, when you see headlines such as "Over 40 Percent of Americans See China As 'Greatest Enemy'" (newsweek headline last month), sure, obviously, a ton of racism is pushing that forward. It's too bad because there are also actual national interests at stake, which is where my concerns lie. These adversaries want the US to fall into permanent fascism, which we are now teetering on the brink of, so I am pretty worried about that.

"You'd expect this from Joe Scarborough he's a far left opinion commentator."

-Fox Anchor

Joe Scarborough served as a Republican in the FL house. And ... as a member of the far left I'm deeply insulted. As I think Joe would be too. We are in crazy town.

When Trump ran on "immigrants are violent criminals" in 2015, his party was mostly skeptical of the idea. But eight-plus years of Trump and eight-plus years of Fox amplifying Trump have shifted the GOP base. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/02/26/trump-immigration-violent-crime/

@pbump they were only "skeptical" that they were allowed to say it out loud, that's all
