‘Mamma Mia!’ Stage Star Sara Poyzer Replaced By AI On BBC Show To Recreate Voice Of Dying Person — Update ( deadline.com )

The BBC has issued a statement that offers important context to Sara Poyzer’s viral social media posts. The British broadcaster said it is using AI technology in a “highly sensitive documentary” to represent the voice of a person who is nearing the end of their life....

In the AI age we are going to need some way to have lasting likeness rights, in life and death.

There should be some sort of protection against having a persons appearance hijacked, especially for commercial purposes.

One of my favourite games, it was a very impressive title for the Game Boy at the time. It had an interesting development story, it started as a Game Boy port of Link to the Past, developed in off hours as a sort of passion project.

I remember having to download a text file guide, with dungeon layouts drawn in ASCII art, to get through a couple of the tricky bits.

The Switch port is worth checking out too, the graphical style is adorable.

Yes. If a person can choose how to live their life, they should be able to choose how to end their life.

It's a matter that needs to be handled sensitively, but it is a right I feel everyone should have.

The delivery system, the Trident missiles, are still made by the US.

We haven’t had a nuclear-capable missile program since the 1970s.

Well at least we’ve been making all those investments in infrastructure to keep up. Oh, wait…

Once bitten twice shy.

I would like to believe the pledges were positive news. But Affinity has already broken their promise on acquisition, so I’m having a hard time now taking their word on licensing.

I’ve always been doubtful about these privacy “protection” services. Giving a bunch of personal data and money to a commercial entity making seemingly dubious claims it can compel other services to remove your data has never seemed like a great idea. Data is the new oil, it’s incredibly valuable, and there is too much incentive for companies like that to become just another data collector.

In the UK the BBC are running their own instance social.bbc on trial basis, and I think the trial was recently extended.

Hopefully other public bodies will follow suit.

Some people are suggesting there may be a malicious actor at work, after multiple business have been struck with this in such a short space of time.

It’s also possible the affected business all use a common payment handling software which is experiencing issues.

The Guardian has changed the article’s headline since I posted it here.

The “Youngsters” headline can still be seen via the Wayback Machine’s archive from earlier this morning.

Reminds me a bit of the short science fiction story There Will Come Soft Rains, about a very diligent smart home still attempting to care for its occupants after the bomb drops.

Considering the state of our roads already, it wouldn’t be surprise me if the pothole robot gets stuck in a big pothole.

It’s also got to survive interactions with the general public, who don’t all seem that keen on autonomous vehicles so far.

‘Desperate neglect’: teachers washing clothes and finding beds as poverty grips England’s schools ( www.theguardian.com )

School leaders said that as well as hunger they were now trying to mitigate exhaustion, with increasing numbers of children living in homes without enough beds or unable to sleep because they were cold. They warned that “desperate” poverty was driving problems with behaviour, persistent absence and mental health....

Horrifying how far our country has sunk. We are supposed to one of the 10 wealthiest countries in the world, yet this is how an increasing number of our people are living.

To say the country has been mismanaged would be the greatest of understatements. Change can not come soon enough, and it also must be sustained for as long as possible. One term of government will not be enough, the rot that taken hold could take a generation or more to truly fix.

Kids have been watching plenty of brain melting videos before AI came along too.

If you want kid’s brains to stay nice and firm don’t let them be raised by a tablet.

ZX Touch Is A £220 Portable ZX Spectrum With A 7-Inch Screen ( www.timeextension.com )

The ZX Spectrum Vega+ was supposed to be the perfect way to experience classic ZX Spectrum games on the go, but after a botched crowdfunding campaign, ropey hardware and the collapse of the company behind it, Retro Computers Ltd, it has gone down as something of a disaster....

There’s also the Spectrum Next project, an FPGA based modernised Spectrum. Only available via crowdfunding but they are possibly doing another round on Kickstarter sometime this year I think.

There’s been a noticeable shift on r/UnitedKingdom since around the time of the Reddit protests. I no longer participate there but I’ve seen quite a bit of extra unpleasantness the few times of taken a curious look at it.

Not that it was ever a great place to discuss trans issues, but the nastiness seems to be spreading to all manner of topics now.

That’s the problem with sitting on the fence. The fence sitter thinks they will avoid upsetting either side by taking a side, but ends up leaving them both disappointed by not doing so.

There isn’t always a safe play to make for every issue. It’s a lesson I thought Labour would have learned after failing with their deliberately muddled Brexit messaging.

For the guillotine set, the decapitable action figure would have a head that couldn’t be reattached. If you want more heads to roll, more disposable figures would have to be purchased in separate packs.

They could also be sold in blind bags, collect them all!

I know a few people in situations like this. Living with family and ticking over on occasional informal cash in hand labour or on previously accumulated savings.

There’s not a day that goes by where I don’t wish we had chaos with Ed Miliband.

The stable and strong government we’ve had with the 5 successive Tory PMs (so far) since that election has been far worse.

From the way things are going with Prevent, it may soon consider anyone forming somewhat strong opinions on anything to be an extremist.

Unfortunately it’s never-ending cat and mouse battle. The whole point of SEO is to game the search engines systems, so the spammers will now be adjusting their tactics.

I don’t think it’s just SEO that’s the problem with Google search either. They seem to put too much weight on e-commerce over information.
