If you see a new youTube channel with a plain sounding name like "NatureView" or "BrightScience" etc. and there is what looks like a tempting video on a specific education topic "Most Active Volcanoes" or "Incredible Carnivorous Plants"

There is a 50/50 chance it will be a generated voice with stock footage and a script written by GPT.

I am now avoiding videos if I don't recognize the creator, or don't see signs it was made by a person.

So much spam!

@nottrobin @mcc @michaelgemar @PTR_K @Qybat @futurebird the way I describe it, LLMs are "intelligent" but not necessarily "smart", with both terms being complete junk to begin with which is why people argue over them constantly.

They possess certain cognitive abilities around language processing, but not a full set of cognitive abilities and many fall in "sub-human" or "lower end of human" ranges (a popular usage of one it's good at is Executive Function, which gets it used by a lot of ADHD/Autistic people who have an impairment in our executive functioning).

I definitely agree regardless that they're either applied poorly or presented poorly in most cases. (ie. applied poorly meaning cases like customer service LLMs that get companies sued, and presented poorly being cases like search where people are treating it as authoritative as opposed to supplementary).

And the programming assistant side gets wildly misrepresented (as someone who happily uses AI as a programming assistant, but never in the ways people seem to think it gets used...)

@rvkennedy @JorgeStolfi @kcoyle @immibis @pluralistic @funcrunch that's got a number of things jumbled.

The debt ceiling has nothing to do with the central bank or printing money, it has to do with the government issuing bonds (taking on more debt).

The dollar value drops internationally because a failure to raise the debt ceiling also means the government defaults on it's debts. It's international debts are still in USD, so those debts are worth less if the US threatens to not pay them.

@prestontumber @JorgeStolfi @kcoyle @rvkennedy @immibis @pluralistic @funcrunch the way I explain it to people is that gold, the typical backer that they talk about, is itself a fiat currency... after a couple rounds of conversation eventually the light bulb kicks on that gold has value because we say it does... ie. fiat.

@snarfed.org@snarfed.org @activitypubblueskybridge @fedidevs @fediversenews Letting people opt-out IS NOT consent.

@eishiya @byjp you should know that Bluesky, once they start federating (which this is directly related to)... is the fediverse as well.

Please do not confuse Mastodon/ActivityPub with the whole fediverse. The fediverse is a wide array of servers and there are many bridges between different protocols out there already.

And on the topic of consent, this is a purely public system. Consent within the fediverse is opt out, when you post publically you are automatically consenting to anyone receiving and transmitting your post however they wish. If you do not wish to provide that consent, you make your post private.

Bridges are a natural part of federation and are key to it's survival as it makes all relevant platforms less likely to collapse.

Fediverse! I’ve been building a bridge to Bluesky, and they’re turning on federation soon, which means my bridge will be available soon too. You’ll be able to follow people on Bluesky from here in the fediverse, and vice versa.

Bluesky is a broad network with lots of worthwhile people and conversations! I hope you’ll give it a chance. Only fully public content is bridged, not followers-only or otherwise private posts or profiles. Still, if you want to opt out, I understand. Feel free to DM me at @snarfed (different account than this one), email me, file a GitHub issue, or put #nobridge in your profile bio.

(Admins, if you decide beforehand that you don’t want your instance to federate with Bluesky over the bridge, the domain to block is bsky.brid.gy.)

A number of us have thought about this for a while now, we’re committed to making it work well for everyone, and we’re very open to feedback. Thanks for listening. Feel free to share broadly.

@jamie @snarfed.org@snarfed.org @oliphant @HistoPol @luca @PCOWandre @chronohart @snarfed a boost in this case will operate the same as with normal ActivityPub, in which case the block should remain honored. It'll be the exact same as someone boosting your post and whether someone you blocked on AP can see that post.

I'll note however that the bridge should not be a concern if you're worried about that, instead you should be concerned of the thousands of instances like mine (Friendica and Hubzilla) that will natively support Bluesky. If we boost your post, then it'll be copied over to Bluesky with no actual connection to you in the network, so your blocks will not apply and you will have no control over the post afterwards.
