Rent vs. Food -- an economist explains why paying 30% or more of your income for rent is nothing to worry about.

Bonus: apples and oranges discussion.

Yes, you read that first part right. An economist who not only has no problem with paying so much in rent but who straight up says it's fine.

Why?

Because, he says, food was about 29% of expenditure and it now down to about 10%.

So, a higher percentage going to rent is cool.

He even had a graph to show the numbers.

Let's assume these percentages are correct. Let's also assume that all the other expenditures, be they healthcare, education, etc. we face are irrelevant.

Now assume a temporary shortfall.

A fixed large amount of money goes away within the first days of the month. If you fail to pay all of it on time, you are homeless after a few months.

Not having the full 10% for food is bad but, at least in the US, you have a good chance at bridging a shortfall, from food banks to sneaking some ...🧵

Given that the gentleman's argument is really only applicable to folks under financial pressure, it is pretty disingenuous on the basic premise, too. Minimum wage earners pay more than 10% for food of their income anyway.

That was a pretty long winded way to say the comparison sucks, :-).

But, es you can compare apples and oranges. They share all relevant features of round fruit with a peel, don't they?
