In related Congress of Humanities and Social Sciences news, it is true - about half of the scholarly associations moved off McGill.

The Canadian Association for the Study of International Development (CASID-ACEDI) was amongst the first to move its conference from McGill to l'Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) thanks to the diligent work of the executive.

A real shame and loss for McGill.

Excited to share the insightful papers for the panel I organised on 'Epistemic Justice and the Knowledge Commons' with the incredible scholars Katherine Blouin, Girish Daswani, Blane Harvey, Julia Paulson, and humbly, me.

We presented at the 2024 CASID-ACEDI Conference on global development as part of the Congress of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences.

Epistemic Justice and the Knowledge Commons Chair(s): Prachi Srivastava (Western University, Canada) Critical and radical analyses view ‘development’ as propagated via colonial modernist agendas predicated on an evolutionary societal model in which ways of being, living, and knowing and their organisation into forms (systems) of the centres of colonial power were made aspirational and obligatory for colonised peoples. This relied on exalting knowledge systems and knowledges of proclaimed colonial centres of enlightenment by ignoring, subjugating, and obliterating existing, traditional, and ancient knowledge systems and knowledges through ‘epistemicide’, or the annihilation of Indigenous and Southern knowledges (Hall & Tandon, 2017). ‘Development’ hinged on ‘cognitive imperialism’ (Battiste, 2018) and the disappearance of knowledges, rooted in violence (McKittrick, 2021). Exalted knowledge systems and knowledges have been positioned in dominant discourse and international development architecture as those of ‘Western’/high-income OECD countries; and those in need of ‘development’, as of the majority world. Critical discursive views expose this dualistic characterisation as the product of colonial enterprises affixing the centrality of the perspective, according to Stuart Hall’s ([1993], 2018) classic formulation, of ‘the West and the Rest’, propagated by myths of relational superiority of ‘the West’.

    I speak about the equity issues in the Global South, and a tendency to view education as a technical enterprise. I argue education is a complex and political process and systems are value-laden, requiring a critical examination of supposed resource scarcity and the roles of public and private actors.

    I continue to think academics should on the whole be weirdos off doing their own weird thing, or people who occasionally say "That's obviously crap" in public and go back to doing their own weird thing. The idea of “impact” is mostly poisonous.

    @kjhealy And they should be left alone to do their own thing. But, that really only happens if they're allowed to do slow research and slow projects. The true impact of most of our work only reveals itself years later.

    Truly humbled to have one of my papers included in the 50th Anniversary Special Collection of the Oxford Review of Education (ORE).

    The ORE has published research by some of the most leading scholars in education. To have my work recognised alongside many whose contributions have shaped the field, and my thinking, is a real honour.

    I've sat on this news for a while, gobsmacked. It was a lovely way to start the year.

The journal was established to provide a forum for an ‘enlarged discussion’ of educational issues, with contributions from researchers from diverse fields and disciplines. Below is the list of 50 articles selected by the Editors which are freely available in celebration of this 50th anniversary. We purposefully set out to choose articles that represent the quality and breadth of publications in the Oxford Review of Education, but avoided selecting articles that are already freely available. The journal addresses big topics in education in many different sectors and the selected articles focus upon early years settings, schools and higher education.     I highly recommended Cannibal Capitalism to @academicchatter and @bookstodon. I remember reading in undergrad. I don’t think I cited her as often in grad school but that is another story. Cannibal Capitalism is written for a mass audience but what is overwhelmingly obvious is that she has mastered her craft of inserting large complex ideas into concise language. It is a masterwork.

    Does anyone know of a tool that helps to generate Alt Text descriptions of images that don't have text? I feel my descriptions are either too sparse or novellas. Help.
