This week at Config I gave a talk about pixel fonts that I think turned out really well.

It’s called “In defense of an old pixel,” and I don’t think I ever worked harder on a talk before. Check it out here! (25 minutes)

The hotel security was curious why I’m taking photos of hidden stairwell placards.

“This engraving font is named Gorton and is well over 100 years old! It was originally made for camera lenses in the U.K. It’s everywhere around you, usually in places like these.”

@mwichary I managed to obtain the "Century of the Typewriter" book, full of cool history and pics. Do you know about it, and do you want it? I can send it your way if you're interested

@altomare I do have it, but thanks for offering!

Has anyone written about how textual generative AI feels strangely close to toxic masculinity in some respects? The absolute confidence in everything stated, the lack of understanding of the consequences of getting that confidence wrong for important questions, the semi-gaslighty feeling when it “corrects” itself when you call it out on something. It so often feels like talking to someone one would despise and avoid in “real life.” I’m curious if anyone did some writing on this.

My friend and I went to see Chicago bridges opening to let the boats to the lake this morning…

Long story short, here’s some bridge Gorton.

@mwichary In an alternate reality, the German and English language fused to become Engman (or Germlish depending on where you live).

I got one artifact lost between realities from this dimension, I thought you might like it.

Out of all the layouts, QWERTYZ truly is one of them.

“Of course I like to read nontechnical books, although I read very slowly. Here are some that I heartily recommend.”—Don Knuth

In Gmail, searching for…

label:keyboard-secrets label:inbox

…doesn’t find all the relevant emails. I can see them in my inbox with the label as I navigate using < > buttons, but they aren’t all found when searching.

I thought this might have to do with the fact that perhaps not all the emails in threads get the right metadata, but even turning off “Conversation view” (threading) doesn’t solve the issue.

Is there a secret to making it happen? I’ve been googling and experimenting for a while.

Okay, today is the day when it’s done: the last three books have been delivered.

All the Shift Happens pledges, preorders, regular orders, almost-sold-outs and absolutely-last-copies-sold-outs, people who asked for delays, people who forgot about their pledges, some post office and FedEx snafus, a few damage replacements… all of it is now delivered!!!!!

For the first time in half a year I don’t have to worry about things in transit.

I think I’m going to get some ice cream to celebrate.
