Maybe we need to make some space to have conversations about the way that rigid gender expectations can hurt people. I'm not talking about trans people, exclusively (in fact the trans people I know are among the most sophisticated when it comes to processing these kinds of events and emotions)

No, where I see a lot of unprocessed trauma flailing around putting everyone in a bad way is from cis people who have unexamined psychological harm due to their failure to conform to some gender norm. 1/

@futurebird As a little kid, I was pretty girlie -- long hair, lots of pink, etc. Then suddenly when I hit adolescence, everything got weird. I felt like I missed getting a copy of the "Girl Handbook" because even though I wasn't a tomboy or genderfluid, I wasn't a girl the way all the other girls were. I didn't travel in a pack, I didn't like babies or fashion or makeup. I couldn't relate to other girls anymore, but I still felt like I was one! It made me question "traditional" roles, for sure.

@IngaLovinde @faassen @futurebird @tj My dad & I had a standoff over a "gendered" bike. I had a Strawberry Shortcake bike w/ training wheels when I was 6. Then we went overseas 1 yr & the bike was stored. When I came back I learned to ride & wanted a new bike for my bday - a red Huffy BMX, which had a "boy's" frame. We fought for 2 weeks til I sequestered myself in my room w/ a sign on the door: I WANT A BMX BOY'S BIKE! My brother brought me peanutbutter sandwiches. Dad gave in after 2 days. 🎉

Facebook is (still) full of fake photographs of "disabled veterans" sitting on the curb that say "Why don't photos like this ever trend?"

But it's not a photo of real people. This strikes me as disrespectful, fraudulent, stolen valor stuff. Never mind the endless whitewashing of the US Military by playing on our valid desire to take care of the people harmed by it.

You can report images as "AI generated" but it doesn't do anything. (I suspect it'd be used to make the images less detectable.)

@futurebird I'm on a Discord where we have a dedicated spot for "what fresh. new, bot-posted, AI-generated, dystopian hell is this?" photos. Just when you think you've seen the worst one, no you haven't. shudder

I have seen so many posts lately with requests for boosts that don't also use hashtags/enough hashtags/relevant hashtags. This is a reminder to tag your shit, y'all! It's the only way to get seen on Fedi.

Also follow @FediTips if you are new, they are super helpful!

When I bought this titanium teapot as a gift to myself for finding a new job years ago I really felt bad about how much it cost— but I’ve decided it’s, in a way the ideal sort of expensive treat: absurdly durable, timeless, utilitarian, strange.

This one is going in my will. I hope someone takes it with them to space someday. (that is my new heirloom benchmark: how likely is this to be in the 1 ton allowance for those moving to the dyson swarm never to set foot on earth again?)

If we have so much good AI tech why can't anyone make a spell check that I can't stump?

A few times a week I must go to the dictionary (like a cavewoman!) or search the web since I've mangled some word in such a way that there are no suggestions. It's just "wrong" what's wrong with it? Who knows!

Could it be a scientific name and just not in the dictionary? Maybe! Could it be an obscure word with a pretentious UK spelling? Probably! Could it be wrong? Also probably.

Do this first AI lords.

@futurebird I feel this pain. Further frustrating things, my keyboard often knows what I'm trying to type better than my texting app, but my texting app will absolutely take over and suggest the WORST options rather than the ones where I am off by one letter because I hit the letter next to it on the keyboard. I always have to tap in multiple places to get it to give up so that I can get back to my keyboard and choose the correct option from its suggestions. And they are BOTH Google products!

Concept: the fae are out to get your name to control you, and the true name they need is the screen name you used online when you were in middle school
