The Maldives, which recently decided to block Israeli passport holders from entering the country has now realized this means restricting access also to Arab-Israelis, which make up 20% of the Israeli population. Oops! Guess they only really wanted to ban Jews! https://www.ynet.co.il/vacation/flights/article/rjfcxvhr0

Why is it so challenging for folks outside of Israel to wrap their heads around the fact that supporting the Israeli hostages and their swift release does not mean supporting Netanyahu and his coalition government? The majority of hostage families and their communities blame the Israeli government for not preventing October 7th and not securing the hostages' release, massive protests are constantly held in Israel demanding Netanyahu step down. Is it too complex? I'm exhausted from explaining it.

Just like there has been little condemnation from the international left of the attacks of October 7th and the taking of Israeli hostages, there has likewise been little condemnation of the fact that the hostages were held among civilian population. And in case some wiseass decides to ask "where you you want Hamas to hold them?", the answer is nowhere, kidnapping people and taking them hostage is a WAR CRIME.

Wow. Wow. Wow. Just broke down and cried in front of the TV. I can't believe it. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/06/08/middleeast/four-israeli-hostages-freed-gaza-intl/index.html

As a reminder, Israel has conscription. Most Israelis have served in the military, and in fact this artist seems to have served in my year, which was 24(!) years ago. Banning folks who served in the IDF is akin to, well, just banning Israelis. (1/4) A bit of context on why recognizing a Palestinian state is a touchy subject for Israelis.

First off, regardless of what you've seen in the media, the majority of Israelis are not messianic settlers. The majority of Israelis, at least, in my Telavivian bubble, support a Palestinian state and believe whole-heartedly in a two-state solution. The discourse lies in the chicken or the egg: either Palestinians should first receive recognized statehood and then work towards de-radicalization,

On the topic of antisemitism and the Western left: One of the reasons that Jews are disappointed in liberal or progressive groups, who we previously considered allies, is because in the face rising antisemitism we are being 'splained on what antisemitism is (or isn't), how we should be feeling, and being gaslit and suggested the we are misinterpreting or exaggerating the behavior of others. It's exhausting.

Today is Israeli Independence Day. The events of October 7th and those thereafter were a smack in the face for me, a painful & bitter reminder of why Israel must exist; at the end of the day, it's largely Jews that stand up for other Jews unashamed, out loud and in the open. Despite the hardships, I wish you a happy 76th birthday, tiny country.

In case it bears repeating: protesting Netanyahu's government or his cabinet's decisions is NOT antisemitism, nor is it anti-Zionism. Plenty of Zionists, Jews, and Israelis have been protesting his policies before the war. Netanyahu and his messianic government do not have a monopoly over Zionism and conflating his actions with Zionism and protesting his policies in the name of anti-Zionism only serves his political purpose.

Denying Jewish students access to campus? THAT'S antisemitism.
