The house sparrow used to be one of the UK’s most common birds but surveys have shown a decline of nearly 80% since 1973. If you are lucky enough to see or hear the unmistakable chatter of this cheeky bird, encourage it with bird feeders and provide nest boxes.

@RolloTreadway we used to have dozens of them about 20 years ago and used to keep them well fed. Then they disappeared. Disease? Fewer nesting opportunities? I don’t know. Bizarrely, there is a colony of them in our local park which I think nest in the cricket pavilion but there is no evidence that their numbers are increasing.
