It was a disaster, and that might be the best thing that could have happened tonight.

I gasped when Biden walked out before he even spoke a word, and when he did start speaking, his voice was so painfully aged and quiet. He gathered stamina, rather than lose it, but he never came close to sharp vitality.

Mostly though, it was encouraging to hear that the main chatter during and following the debate is about what the process of getting Biden to step down might look like. 1/

I’m curious and hopeful about the next 24 to 48 hours.

Our greatest danger is not that people want to vote for Trump or that a majority cannot see through his lies. That hasn’t been a worry or a concern for some time.

The worry has been, rather, that people would just be uninspired about voting at all and not show up, or mad about being stuck with Biden as an option they don’t want, and cast meaningless votes to protest. 2/

So, yes, tonight was a disaster, but as a result, I feel more hopeful than I did before the debate started and more hopeful than I’ve felt for a fair few months.

For at least this moment, it feels like something new might arise. Whether it will be good or bad, who can say? But there’s a breath of possibility, and I’m hopeful. /3
