1/… I'll ask a favor of you.

This trial hasn't even started yet, not one witness. Yet...

I'm getting Doomers galore in my feed.

A Trumpy helped convict him in an earlier trial.

The prosecutors are vetting the jurors carefully.

I am not Dooming. Not yet.

Can we wait for the trial to be in full swing before predicting the worst possible outcome? Or do people thrive on constant pessimism? I just don't.

Thanks so much for listening. Let's try to be hopeful.

More…

@GottaLaff:
Absolutely!

I think that it's fascinating even at this stage, but we won't know the outcome until the jury renders its verdict, so it's pointless to try to predict because none of us are in the jury room.

None of us watching from the outside gets to see everything the jury does, and we certainly don't get to study the exhibits in context the way the jury will be able to. They get all of the testimony and the exhibits. They see the reactions of the defense, the prosecutors, the witnesses, etc. They'll have a much more complete picture of the whole thing than we will. And they'll be charged with ruling based on the evidence presented to them in the court room, not what's being reported on social media and in the press. While juries can be unpredictable, they will be fully vetted before the trial begins, and I for one trust that they'll do their job according to the law.

I appreciate your rundowns that allow us to watch the process unfold. This is really the good part of social media.

@GottaLaff @TheEjj: I would agree that trial is likely to be problematic if it stays with that judge based on the filings and the rulings so far, but even there, we won't really know until it plays out.

On the upside, the documents case is very well documented, and Jack Smith's team is the best of the best, so I wouldn't write it off yet.

🧵NEW THREAD for #TrumpTrial #legal #Trump here. 1/...

Apparently Trump woke up.

Via Orden:

Trump has re-entered the courtroom, per pool, but the video feed hasn't yet been turned on in the overflow room.

@GottaLaff: Hope all goes well.

Thank you for the updates so far. It's going to be an interesting couple of months in NY.

goodreedAJ ,
@goodreedAJ@sfba.social avatar

@GottaLaff: Wow, quite the rundown. I'm exhausted just reading through it. Thank you for putting this all together for us to follow along.

Looking at that questionnaire, I'd think that it'd be really tough to be a completely impartial juror in this case.

goodreedAJ ,
@goodreedAJ@sfba.social avatar

@GottaLaff: Very true! It's a question of whether somebody can set aside their biases as well as all they know about the trial coming in and base their judgement solely on what's presented in the courtroom. That's the hard part even if they haven't been influenced by the rage merchants in the media, particularly if folks have read all of the filings along the way.

Actually, that's a question. Are all of the pretrial motions and fillings made available to the jury as part of the trial?

Here is Stephanie P. Jones' take on SCOTUS's decision to grant cert in the immunity case.

Hi, Fediverse,

I have my weekend blog post.

Click here: https://terikanefield.com/why-some-prefer-oligarchy/

Why some prefer oligarchy (and what's Russia got to do with it)

No, the members of Congress carrying water for Putin are not useful idiots or easily fooled.

They are Putin's allies and willing partners.

I offer some history and a timeline to explain how and why.

goodreedAJ ,
@goodreedAJ@sfba.social avatar

@Teri_Kanefield @maccruiskeen: No, I don't think you were quite harsh enough. The complicity with illegal acts though does make me wonder how many of the extremist congress critters will eventually find themselves under indictment, assuming the investigations reveal illegal activity that can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court. After all, the only DoJ policy against indicting an official is for the sitting president. Everyone else is fair game if investigations warrant it.

“includes 3 former GOP candidates, Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Vivek Ramaswamy & Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.). …Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), Gov. Kristi Noem (R-S.D.) and former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard…”

@GottaLaff @BenAveling: If only we all could ensure that his chances of winning were = 0.

Any sane person would see this as the necessary and logical path for the U.S. to have any hope of remaining a democracy. That there are so many who are willing to throw away every bit of progress we've made since the country's founding is equal parts astonishing and terrifying.

Still, we have to remember that those wanting to destroy democracy in the U.S. are not the majority. They are a very loud, very scary minority. So we need to make sure that everyone votes. That's the only way that we can keep working toward the ideals the country claims to stand for.

Funny how Trump and the GOP MAGA faction are giving them such great copy for their ads.

@GottaLaff: Not inconsistent at all as the Trump filing claims. In December when Smith wanted SCOTUS to grant cert on the immunity madness, it was to get it done quickly so the trial could resume without further delay. SCOTUS elected at that time to let it play out through the appeals process. Now that the circuit court has ruled decisively, there's no need for SCOTUS to grant cert since logically, legally, and every other way, they'd just have to uphold the circuit court's ruling in the end anyway.

Again, dipping into hearing.

Via Stephen Fowler:

Robin Yeartie, a longtime friend of Fulton DA Fani WIllis, says in court that Willis and Nathan Wade were in a personal relationship some time late 2019, after the pair met at a judicial conference.

She also said she saw Willis/Wade kissing, hugging, being affectionate.
