The strange thing about living in Australia is you're used to terrible, nocturnal screeching things, many of which fly. You're used to spiders as big as your hand, or ignoring one of the 10 most deadly snakes turning up while you're walking around the block. You're used to, on a hike, running into furry things as tall as you hopping around the place while carrying their young in flesh pouches.

But raccoons? That’s so weird. They're real things? For serious? That rummage through your garbage?

The nurse in “Dracula” (1931) fainting when she sees Renfield cackling. She dramatically faints to one side, landing very softly and in quite a practiced and staged manner.

@vampiress Yeah I definitely don't faint like that from what I'm told.

One time was while donating blood, was entirely undramatic except for the blood bank folks listing their damn minds over it.

One time I smashed my head on the kitchen cabinet, and another I fell face-first on a carpet floor and got rug burn on my forehead. 😂

Well, I spoke too soon with the RC2014. Definitely some things wrong with it. But hey, way more of it works first try than I expected!

Now for the fun** part: figuring out what's wrong... despite me not owning an oscilloscope.

I'm... going to end up buying an oscilloscope, aren’t I?

Hmm... what's a decent brand to go with there for small hobby electronics stuff…

@vampiress @mike I love mine. I bought a Siglent one because it was the first thing that showed up under my pain threshold and didn't look completely dodgy. I'm not cluey enough to need anything fancier, though I could have found something cheaper with more research I think?

Only thing is I somehow managed to kill a ground on one of the leads, and I'm not sure how (didn't do any of the usual mistakes).

Spent last night introducing a friend of mine who's a bit younger than me to 8-bit computing and gaming. She did shockingly well at Adventure on the 2600, and handing her an Usborne book and a C64 she had an absolute blast coding games.

I genuinely think issuing modern versions of these kind of systems with simple coding languages to all young kids these days would be beneficial in a lot of ways. (And fun for them.)

@vampiress OK but does she know just how damn good she has it running 8 bit stuff on a PVM instead of grandma's old TV with nothing but RF input and a vertical deflection circuit that collapses periodically until you smack it? My god that screen is lovely 😍

It's been a while BUT... I got a few more big box games! Though, 'big' is subjective here. The first and most exciting one I've wanted for a while - the original 688 Attack Sub, which is one of those 1980s style 'mid sized' boxes. Slight, and a bit smaller than what'd become the boxed size standard later.

I love the design - a 'classified' document containing orders.

The back cover, advertising: “THE TARGET THINKS. THE TARGET FEELS. THE TARGET WANTS YOU DEAD.” and "This is the simulation that resets the standards in color, realism and 3D graphics: that puts you in command of a top secret billion dollar Los Angeles class U.S. attack sub: that pits you and your crew against deadly fleets of submerged, surface and airborne targets around the globe, that unfolds the dangers of espionage, evasion and destruction.”
The box has one of my favourite things - a fold-out front cover. But unlike other boxes where that’s for additional marketing material selling you on buying the game, in this case it actually opens up the box - so you can extract the manual and floppy disks without fully unpacking the box (which I have nonetheless done here).

@vampiress Fwoar, Starcraft is one of the games (like Diablo 2) I only kept the jewel case for. I found a boxed copy at an opp shop, but it's one of those gold "best seller" copies, not the OG.

@vampiress Aye, I was a dirty pirate so I never actually owned Diablo when it was relevant, and I only bought D2 and SC for Battle.net!

I then got absolutely stomped on SC and never really played it multiplayer again. 😂 I remember really enjoying the campaigns though, and Brood War (of which I've still only got the jewel case).

    @vampiress It's so funny how cheap military disposals used to be, then somewhere along the lines prices started climbing, and now I'm not even sure where my closest surplus outlet would be... we have a "disposals" store in my city but the one time I went in there it was all brand new, full-price camping gear. The store likely only exists because my city has no BCF.

    I left it in the US but I had an ALICE pack and it was pretty great for carrying shit around, and it cost me basically nothing...

    @vampiress Dunno if the 7800 pads are affected but I know Sega ones are... are you aware of the problems with those where you can pop half your keyboard (I think it's one of the CIA chips that gets toasted)?

    IIRC it's button 2 + any of a certain number of keys and you end up with voltage where it shouldn't be and something goes pop.

    (We used Sega controllers all the time when i was a kid, no idea how close we came to popping something)

    @vampiress Yeah I really don't remember what the specific problem is, I would guess it's probably fine and you're at least as capable as me of understanding the pinouts.

    There was a really great forum post ages so that explained exactly what happens but I can't find it and don't recall the details.

    Mainly just when I see someone say "this is my first c64" I hit em with one of the two major foot guns just for safety (you're probably aware of this too but don't use the potted original PSU).

    @vampiress I remember really liking Terminal Velocity, and also there was a Psygnosis game "Darker" that I remember liking a lot too, it's in a pretty similar vein but well... in the dark.
