Inflation has made millionaire middle class. Go after the billionaires please or at least 10 or 100 million level.

Pretty much anyone that can afford to retire is a millionaire these days especially if you include pension and social security values and all their other assets.

I guess it is HP think it is OK to brick your printer due to HP updates but using competing cartridges is just so dangerous. Typical.

I never heard what happened to those bricked printers.

What it makes me think about is how much of the police in Uvalde was theater. They supposedly had training and even a SWAT team. There is a real difference between on paper and in reality.

Facebook degrading Firefox user experience now?

Recently, most images on Facebook have stopped loading for me. Sometimes it's just a few images. Other times it's almost all images. The longer I scroll, the worse it gets. Today, I couldn't even see my own pictures. Are any other Firefox users having this problem, or maybe it's a server issue on Facebook's end?

Actually I like my facebook experience. I just mostly do not use Facebook anymore. I agree though, when I do go on it is nuts.

The international situation is the biggest argument against Trump. Another 4 years of incompetence and self serving is something we cannot really have right now without huge consequences. Kind of feels like all the arguments in the US are just a distraction from the bigger issues.

The thing about social media companies is we all have one important power. Just uninstall the app. I agree they suck in so many ways.

Kids though... There are a few things that make me glad I do not have any. Cell phones and social media. They just seem problematic. Not sure anyone under the age of 16 should have either or be on an unfiltered net connection.

Really no one that does not know the standard net rule of block and move on and never share PII should be on the net. I would hope that a 16 year old would know that but maybe not.

Most people cannot install or debug windows. For most people the biggest issue is their support network. My father-in-law and my wife run Linux and have done so for 20 years. They are not technical and it works just fine. My mom uses Windows and I have not suggested Linux because I am not local. She needs a local support network. I spend as much time or more supporting her.

The worst barrier is explicit hardware compatibility not software. Most hardware works but you never know. For software most things have FOSS eqyivalents. If you actually want to run commercial software then sure Windows or whatever platform it runs on.

A High Priority for Moving Away from Lemmy

Several months ago Beehaw received a report about CSAM (i.e. Child Sexual Abuse Material). As an admin, I had to investigate this in order to verify and take the next steps. This was the first time in my life that I had ever seen images such as these. Not to go into great detail, but the images were of a very young child...

People keep talking about going to another platform. Personally I think a better idea would be to develop lemmy to deal with these issues. This must be a fediverse wide problem. So some discussion with other admins and the developers is probably the way to go on many of these things. Moreover you work with https://opencollective.com/, can they help. Beyond this, especially CSAM, there must be large funding agencies where one could get a grant to get some real professional programming put into this problem. Perhaps we could raise funds ourselves to help with this too.

So frankly I would like to see Beehaw solve the issues with lemmy, rather then just move to some other platform that will have its own issues. The exception may be if the Beehaw people think that being a safe space creates too big a target that you have to leave the Threadiverse to be safe. That to me seems like letting the haters win. It is exactly what they want. My vote will always be to solve the threadiverse issues rather then run away.

Just my feeling. There may be more short term practical issues that take precedence and frankly it is all up to you guys where you want to take this project.

What are your favorite browser extensions?

Ublock Origin is an obvious one, but I also can't stand not having Foxy Gestures anymore. It adds customizable mouse gestures, so you can set it up to have easy swipes to go back a page, reload a page, close a tab, etc, and it feels wonderful and smooth to use compared to just using the traditional buttons to do everything....

Question: Does anyone know what security and privacy extensions are considered redundant in light of recent Firefox improvements in the past few years?

For example, I saw several people recommend Privacy Badger for example. I thought I heard somewhere that was considered not needed now. I do not know for sure so am frankly confused by this and some of the other extensions which I too use to use.

For me I have kind of stopped using most security/privacy extensions except uBlockOrigin and then just configuring Firefox rather tightly. Not sure if this is best approach or not. On one hand every extension increases the attack surface and the uniqueness of the browser so there is a point about less is better, on the other hand some may be useful too.
