Your description of something like The Princess Bride and Pratchett had me intrigued, but it seems like it's not to everyone's taste.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

How are you liking them? I read them a long time ago, when I was pretty young, I wonder how they hold up now. Have been specially thinking about reading The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

That explains why I haven't seen you around. 😀

Happens to me sometimes too, The Better Part of Valor that I was finished couple of weeks ago, took me couple of months, I think. And it was only 300 or so pages. The Way of Kings on the other hand is a pretty meatier book, which I have to re-read soon to get ready for the upcoming fifth book!

What podcasts are you listening to these days? I used to listen to a few during commute, but now that I (luckily) work from home, haven't listened to one in a long time.

Yeah, Stormlight Archive is great. The 5th and final book of the first part of Stormlight Archives is releasing this year. Looking forward to it!

Haven't heard of Serge Storms, will look it up.

I think deus ex machina is part of the genre. Very few books, if any, in progression fantasy are able to avoid it.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Maybe add a few standalone books in the mix? That always help for cleansing the palate.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Sometimes things just don't come together properly. Would be interesting to see some other work of the author.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Yeah, but it's only 2-3 books of slog, and then its good again 😀

Also, while it's slog, they aren't completely bad. There are still good stuff in it.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

How's the Pern series overall? I read 1 or 2 books when I was really young, your comment just reminded me of that. Only thing I remember is that there were small dragons that you sync with or something.

@dresden@discuss.online avatar

sigh you just wasted so much of my time...

I checked if Space Eldritch is available at my local store, but then I thought, there are many original Lovecraft's stories that I haven't read, so checked if they had his work, and they had a Hardcover "Complete Fiction of H. P. Lovecraft", added it to my list to order. Then went to Wikipedia to make sure the book really had the complete fiction, and noticed most of his work is available on WikiSource. So, while I still want that complete collection hardcover, it would be difficult to carry it with me, as I do with my books, so having soft copies would be helpful, so started downloading all the stories, one by one...

Man, even it's wikipedia entry is dense. 😀

dresden Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Have you tried LibraryThing?

dresden Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Well, you can write your tag in any language, and you can search in any language. I have seen names of books in different languages too.

dresden Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Sorry for the late reply. Haven't had to do that. Let me see if we can do that.

Slow and steady wins the race! 😀

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Oooh, nice. How far along are you?

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Wow, a book a day. And I just looked them up, they aren't small either.

What kind of books are these? Leaning towards mystery? or action? or something else?

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Sounds interesting, will check them out.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Logan!

I have seen First Fifteen Lives of Harry August mentioned before, I think. Added to my wishlist!

I actually got first two Cytoverse books in 2021, was waiting for the series to complete before starting it. Started it as soon as I ordered Defiant last week.

Still enjoying Expanse? I may start it after finishing Cytoverse and Confederation series.

I don't think I'll be getting around to Stormlight 5 anytime soon. Need to re-read all the books, and it feels a bit overwhelming, specially with the amount of free time I have these days. Maybe later this year.

I have to reread Dune too. I originally only read the first novel, but now want to try out the sequels too.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

How are you liking it? Have heard good things about it, so have been thinking about getting it soon.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

I have heard the TV season diverges somewhat from the book. Though I haven't watched the show or read the book yet, so no idea about it.

dresden Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

After not thinking about it forever, I was just thinking about few days back. It's interesting to see a poster soon afterwards.

Though, now that I think about it, it was also after watching a Dune meme, so maybe that has something to do with it.

r/Fantasy (and others) BINGO after Rexit and interest check in doing our own.

I was doing the BINGO sheet at r/Fantasy and I had heard there were a few other subreddits doing them too like r/Romance. I continued my sheet even after I left Reddit, but I’m stuck because I still want to discuss it, but don’t have any desire to return to Reddit in any fashion....

dresden Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

That looks good, what about making it "official" /c/books Bingo card?

dresden Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Well, I am pretty much the only active mod here, so I think you are good to go. If you have any questions or need to discuss anything, just let me know.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Wow, she is writing since she was 14. First book published when she was 16. Will check it out. Thanks!

You should share your full bingo card!

Just looked it up, looks interesting. Also just found out that using fifth amendment can be used as evidence against you, I thought that wasn't allowed.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Without knowing much about your tastes, you can check what different people are reading in these weekly threads, and see if anything catches your eye. Or you can make a new thread asking for exactly you are looking for.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Looking forward to it!

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

I have heard The Ferryman mentioned a lot, would love to hear what you think about it.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

I felt something similar about reading some parts of 1984.

Will look it up.

How do you read novels?

These past few months I've come back to reading novels for the first time, really, since I was a kid. I just read them an alternative to scrolling, though, so I don't really pay much attention. When I sit down to watch a film, I try to make sure my mind is clear, my environment is undistracting, and I try to watch observantly...

dresden Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

My problem isn’t sinking into a book, I can do that while lifting weights on a machine or getting head.

I just did that recently. Read a book while cycling (the stationary / exercise machine) and gave myself a very bad case of motion sickness. No reading while doing anything like that from now on 😀

dresden Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

I don't think so deeply about it. I am like the poster above, just pick up the book and read it, just like you pick up the phone and read any post, before scrolling to the next.

I did use to skim on most of the descriptions, so I would get the meat of the story, but not all the flowery imagery with it, but that was when I was more into finishing more books than actually enjoying them. Now I don't care about that, just focus on what I am reading and try to enjoy it.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Best plague book? 😀

I rarely do re-reads, unless it's re-reading books in a series to get ready for next book.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Ah, didn't there were Avatar comics. Are they retelling of the anime or is it some other story?

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

How are you liking it so far? And if you have watched the movie, how will you compare it?

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Yeah, specially when it's not completely ancient, so world is similar to today, but so very different.

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Does this book require any prior knowledge of Dark Lady?

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Interesting, will check them out. Thanks!

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

Ahan, thanks for the info!

dresden OP Mod ,
@dresden@discuss.online avatar

I saw it previously mentioned too, but it was so long, so put it off for later. Will check it out when I am done with my current web novel.
