Sea surface temperatures are warming across the periphery of the Ocean in June during the satellite-era. This is evident in both the north Pacific and north Atlantic.

@Brad_Rosenheim This does not have a large effect. In fact, 1982 was a particularly cool SST in the Arctic, which is shown in the timeseries in the link above.

Trends in June sea ice concentration are still mostly confined to coastal areas of the Ocean. The largest declines are found in the Barents Sea this time of year.

[Sea ice concentration = fraction of ice-cover (observed by satellite). Info: https://doi.org/10.1175/BAMS-D-23-0079.1]

sea ice extent is currently the 10th lowest on record (JAXA data)

    • about 60,000 km² above the 2010s mean
    • about 590,000 km² below the 2000s mean
    • about 1,160,000 km² below the 1990s mean
    • about 1,680,000 km² below the 1980s mean

@ZLabe What just clicked for me is that our irradiance around noon is not too different from what the North Pole is getting all day long right now (40 S).

The total area of #Arctic sea ice is declining in every month of the year. However, the largest losses of sea ice are observed during the late summer and early fall.

For more information: https://repository.library.noaa.gov/view/noaa/56616. Concentration means the fraction of ice cover.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming - There is a widespread positive trend for increasing precipitation across the Ocean in June, which is largest near the North Pole & some coastal land regions

Well now I can finally share - I just started my first day as a federal scientist at NOAA's Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory.

I'll be continuing research on improving our understanding of climate prediction and projection, especially with data-driven approaches for high-impact extremes.

Trends in June sea ice thickness across the Ocean - red shading corresponds to areas of thinning ice over the last few decades. The largest declines are in the East Siberian Sea and Chukchi Sea regions.

Enjoy your week! Here's your Monday ice update - sea ice extent is currently the 9th lowest on record (JAXA data)...

    • about 200,000 km² below the 2010s mean
    • about 690,000 km² below the 2000s mean
    • about 1,230,000 km² below the 1990s mean

    @ZLabe

Hey Zack, this is intended to be a "back at you" message, not a criticism of your excellent technical work.

I've been following you and your excellent data-driven graphics for a while now.

The reason I'm commenting: There is too much doomism in today's climate messaging. It is well warranted, scientifically, and it generates clicks. But it does not inspire action. And action is what we desperately need. Across all sectors of our economy and our politics.

Are you a doomer? I don't believe so. You seem like a brilliant, data-driven scientist. But a continuous thread of amazing graphics showing what a shitshow we're in becomes, after a while, just more doom.

So I beseech thee: sprinkle into your messaging some actionable things people can do to help stabilize, or better, reverse the trajectory we're on.

Much respect to the work you're already doing. Ciao, Mark
