I'm liking the look of this T. zebrina seedling. In good light the leaves develop purple speckles and a pronounced central stripe, over a bright green background.

I've had about fifty seedlings, and it's really tricky narrowing them down and deciding whether any are worth keeping. Especially when there are so many zebrina cultivars already! Is this different enough from 'Discolor' and 'Burgundy' to be interesting?!

Closer view of the leaves. The background colour is bright green, with speckles and a central band of purple, as well as two silver stripes on each leaf.
View of the leaves on another stem, with the same pattern of purple speckles.

My tradescantia hybrid seedling started to open its first flower overnight, so I made a timelapse recording.

Exciting announcement! I have bred a new interspecific hybrid - Tradescantia brevifolia × hirta. This hybrid is previously undescribed and unnamed.

The seed parent was T. brevifolia 'Scout', and the pollen parent was T. hirta 'Swifttale'. I cross-pollinated and collected seeds in summer 2023, they germinated that autumn, and of the two surviving seedlings the first one just flowered for the first time this week.

Remember the mystery seedlings I've been teasing about since last year? It's finally time for the big reveal... but it's a bit disappointing.

As a few people guessed, the seed parent is Tradescantia 'DRATRA01' (aka Roxxo), and the seedlings are identical to that cultivar.

The species identity of this cultivar is a bit uncertain - it was released as T. spathacea, but it seems to in fact be T. schippii.

T. schippii belongs to the Campelia subgenus, alongside T. zebrina. So, last year when my 'DRATRA01' flowered I tried to cross-pollinate it with my zebrina cultivars - the closest relative I had. I eventually got a few seeds, which turned into a few seedlings, and I was hopeful that I might actually have a new hybrid on my hands.

I found a weird little mutation on this T. zebrina Superba. From the top it looks totally normal, but from the underside there are random sectors with no purple.

The same stem flipped over. The leaf undersides are purple but there's a some random stripe of silvery-green on each leaf too.

Another T. pallida seedling I'm definitely planning to register and distribute. This one has adorable flowers with super rounded petals, and the leaves seem to stay very small even in different growing conditions. Not sure what I'll name it yet 😁

The leaves lower on the plant, they're pointed oval shapes, dark green with slightly reddish-brown edges and scattered white hairs.

I'm always impressed by the size of the flowers on T. zebrina 'Leprechaun'. Here's one (right) next to 'Purpusii' (left).
