The Science Museum in London has published a blog post on asteroid naming, and describing the campaign to name asteroid 2001 CC21!

@elizabethtasker Something similar happened in a game about Japanese mythical figures. The game designers included a figure called Kotahi, based on a Wikipedia page of Legendary Japanese Monsters, but that entry in fact was added to the page over a year earlier as a joke and referred to Kotahi-Manawa Bradford, a New Zealand teenager. So it doesn't have to be difficult to make up a deity ...
