This weekend I've mostly just been playing SKALD: Against the Black Priory, and boy am I having a fine old time with it.

ThreeOhFour OP ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress It's SO good! The artists who worked on it did great (but also the game itself is so fun and satisfying)

ThreeOhFour OP ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress Yeah, it's a bit odd! I believe it's somewhere between 15-20 hours. I'm on 15 hours so far, but I play pretty slowly and thoroughly. Not sure why it's not a bit higher tbh. I can't remember how much I paid during crowdfunding period but it's been worth every cent!

ThreeOhFour OP ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress I wonder if Raw Fury set the pricing. Either way, I hope it sells a squillion copies and in a few years I can kick back with SKALD 2 and think what a great life it all is.

ThreeOhFour OP ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress tbh I think Humble, Steam sales, XBOX Live and Epic free game of the month messed up those ideas a LONG time ago, not to mention the iOS store. What I genuinely think, though, is that there are two customer bases, the people who HAVE to have the game, and the people who'll pick it up out of curiosity but may never play it. Somewhere the right pricing is between those two folks, accounting for sales & stuff.

ThreeOhFour OP ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress I think the deluxe edition is a smarter price point for the game - hopefully enthusiastic folks will grab that one and send a bit extra $$ to the devs.

ThreeOhFour OP ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress I genuinely think that best practice depends on your particular needs as a dev. Higher price means a longer tail, folks waiting until a sale, etc. Lower price may lead to a healthier figure at launch because more folks will take a gamble if the price is lower. So I think if you're setting up for a sustainable trickle vs "need funding to kick off the next thing" your decisions will vary.

ThreeOhFour OP ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress Sensible! You have to know your own work in order to make decisions like this. It's why marketing/promo folks as consultants might not always be the best in some cases.

ThreeOhFour OP ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress Absolutely.

The fukt thing about modern devices is that despite battery technology improvements, they're built around ~ 1 day battery life.

This means when the batteries begin to not hold so much charge, they stop being useful real fast.

My Apple Watch is like 4 years old, and its battery life now means I can't use it a whole day. Which means I basically need a new one.

At least my iPhone 13 Pro Max, which had when new about 2 days of battery life, is still usable despite a battery health drop - I just charge it every night.

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress my watch battery still as good as new 😂

Headline for the ages.

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress The headlines this week have been wild in general.

vampiress , to random
@vampiress@eigenmagic.net avatar

Well how's this for an appropriate thing to turn up this week?

I've wanted these for years, but never found ones that didn't cost as much as a small car, until these appeared for auction on eBay.

I only had "budget" editions of the original Monkey Island when I was young. Crappy half-size things with the beautiful cover art wrecked by "HIT SQUAD" or whatever branding it had.

#RetroGaming

The back covers of Monkey Island 1 & 2. Including the notable line on the Monkey Island 2 box: “Optional easy mode for beginners and magazine reviewers.”
A phat wad of double-density 3.5” disks. That’s a lotta disks for one game… Below it, the Mix ’n Mojo copy protection thing.

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress I really like all four of those but it's wild to me how incredible JA2 still feels to play. Like it's SO good still.

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress Still on my list! Had to finish Baldur's Gate 3 and then of course I had to take a break to play some 20 year old stuff to refresh my brain. You know how it is.

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress Nice. I'm in research mode atm too. Curious what ARPGs you're playing!

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress You just reminded me that I had been meaning to check out Tunic!

@vampiress RPGs are often so hard! My fav genre but folks let's just calm down a bit.

EXTREMELY excited to be working on @grumpygamer's next game.

It's already got me thinking about it at random hours, scribbling ideas down in my various sizes of notebook.

(Anyone else have a stationary problem when it comes to their design notebooks?)

@vampiress @grumpygamer Don’t even talk to me about too many notebooks/sketchbooks. But have fun filling them up!

vampiress , to random
@vampiress@eigenmagic.net avatar

So, starting this week... things will be a bit different.

For reasons that I'll talk more about later in the week, I now have time to work on my own projects, along with [redacted].

For my first task, well…

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress Curious if you have a reference in mind for the graphical look? I'm always interested in how roguelike folks try to approach art direction.

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress Nice plan! I assume SKALD: Against the Black Priory is on your watch list?

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress The demo was SO good. And it's out in less than a month. I am really looking forward to it.

Second session of Curse of Strahd went well last night.

It's odd getting used to a combat system crunchy enough to warrant tiles and a map but... it's fun.

My goddamn chicken-scratching. Hey, at least the text of the chanting is legible? “HE IS ANCIENT HE IS THE LAND”

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress I like the bolt action pen!

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress Because I cannot help but be a bad influence, I have to point out the multipen which requires you to push the clutch in and then move the gearstick to select your colour. https://www.theautopian.com/this-pen-with-a-working-manual-transmission-and-a-clutch-is-a-work-of-art-you-can-recreate/

Continued PVM adventures:

When I first got an Xbox 360, I didn't have an LCD TV. So my first experiences with many original 360 games was 4x3, on CRT. The games still look really very good on it.

Niko on the phone in Broker, in GTA IV, on the same setup.

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress That's how I played all my PS3 games too and honestly I never had an issue. Changed to LCD TV around the same time I got a PS4 (which was like 2018 haha)

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress CRT filter IRL wins yet again! I am always impressed when I see my own art on my CRT computer monitor at how much better the contrast is.

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress It might depend on the games, but I am sure it's doable in many cases!

Slowly increasing my collection of Gold Box AD&D games. #RetroGaming

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress What are your thoughts on the 2000s era one? I found it completely unplayable, to be quite honest. A real mess of a release.

ThreeOhFour ,
@ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

@vampiress I wonder if it ever got fixed. I know they had to patch out an issue with the first release that literally broke windows if you uninstalled the game. The mind boggles.

    ThreeOhFour ,
    @ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

    @vampiress @ThreeOhFour Also if you have Windows 95 you can play Fury³ which is genuinely just the same game with some different graphics. But I loved that thing back in the 90s.

    @vampiress @ThreeOhFour I know Terminal Reality titles were being published by Microsoft Games so it wouldn’t surprise me if there were some cases where this was true as part of one of those “starter software bundle” thingies.

    today’s pickup 😋

    i was surprised at how massive the box is. the cute journal (meant to document your adventure) adds a lot of character

    The inside of the box had the game discs, a Making of Riven documentary, and adventurer’s journal.

    ThreeOhFour ,
    @ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

    @vga256 This is the edition my brother had. There was a catalogue with cool merch items you could order, too. I was immediately hooked on the magic of the setting, even before I saw anything running on the computer screen.

    ThreeOhFour ,
    @ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

    @vga256 Yeah. I got into Myst later, when I started to find puzzles interesting to solve. But in terms of being in a world Riven was easily the standout.

    ThreeOhFour ,
    @ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

    @vampiress @vga256 I've even seen adventure game fans who never played Myst hating on it. It's just people making noise sometimes.

    I've been seeing this gwardar around a fair bit recently. Pretty shy things, but very venomous and it's a reasonably large one. We stopped and stared at each other for a few minutes here this morning.

    ThreeOhFour OP ,
    @ThreeOhFour@mastodon.social avatar

    @vampiress And the city is usually just muggier in general. All that pavement and asphalt makes it so much worse.
