Hideaway on a hidden cove, Scoville Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. June 3, 2020, 7:26 PM.

An evening in late spring. We are looking out through an opening in the forest along the shore of a small, secluded cove on a large lake. Through a break in the clouds we see a patch of cornflower blue sky. Below that, the setting sun is trying to burn through a thin, hazy cloud, tinting it a pale golden orange. The sky is mirrored on the still surface of the lake. There are two young trees growing a few inches apart to our left. A cluster of water grasses sprouting from the shallows just ahead are a lush dark green. Across the water the two peninsulas that form the cove are densely wooded.

    June 12, 1983: Before 6:30, as the first faint blue twilight tinged the blackness, I was on my way. The woods were at their prettiest in those fleeting moments before sunrise; I promised myself that I would try to get early starts more often.

    We emerge from the forest into a high pasture covered with a silvery morning fog. The rising sun is peeking over the horizon, painting the scene with a rich, golden backlighting. A small herd of cattle is grazing far to our right, floating dimly in silver-gold mists which clung to the slopes and contours of the field, concealing the ground below and washing out the horizon. A few scattered tall trees rise through the mists on the edge of the field. It is an unearthly sight. It looks like cow heaven.

    Dramatic clouds sunset, Scoville Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. July 9, 2021, 8:18 PM.

    We are walking down a dirt and gravel path, a large lake to our right, a forest to our left. Both grassy shoulders of the path slope downward several feet and are overgrown with tall weeds, leafy shrubs and occasional white wildflowers. A wooden bench to our left is almost engulfed. The far shore of the lake is wooded. Although the lake is only gently rippled by a soft breeze, dark and dramatic clouds are streaming past at low levels beneath a high hazy overcast. The rays of the setting sun are breaking through in a few spots, painting some of the clouds orange and gold.

    Gold cotton candy clouds sunset. New Britain Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. September 8, 2020, 7:16 PM.

    An overgrown field at the edge of the forest, filled with very tall grasses and leafy shrubs sprinkled with dozens of yellow and white wildflowers. It is a bit past sunset, the forest is dark and mysterious in the evening light. The pale blue sky is filled with a dramatic mass of whipped cream clouds painted bright gold and orange by that setting sun.

    Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting sunset (h/t George Harrison), Hidden Lake, Fall Mountain, Plymouth, Connecticut. February 18, 2018, 5:44 PM. After a day of thawing, numerous holes in the ice reflect the pinks and golds of a sunset under a crescent moon.

    We are standing atop a ridge, looking down at a small frozen lake surrounded by low wooded ridges silhouetted in the evening light. It is past sunset, the sky is a pale blue along the horizon, deepening as you look up towards the crescent moon. A number of streaky, hazy clouds are still catching bright pinks, golds and oranges from the sun below the horizon. The surface ice on the lake is very thin and reflects darker and more muted versions of the sky colors. It has melted all the way through in many places, leaving small holes where water mirrors the brighter colors.

    Streaks of gold and silver sunset, Scoville Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. June 8, 2020, 7:56 PM.

    Standing on the shore of a large lake. There are small leafy shrubs to our right and left, several partially submerged boulders just offshore. In a sky streaked with long hazy silver clouds, the sun is setting above the wooded far shore, looking like a large blob of golden fire and tinting the streaky clouds near and along the horizon gold and orange. All this is mirrored on the lightly rippled lake surface.

    Sunset's last gleaming. As the twilight fades, amazing color lingers more than a half hour after the actual sunset. New Britain Reservoir, Southington, Connecticut. October 13, 2019, 6:49 PM.

    It is well past sunset with a deep blue twilight settled over the scene. Clouds near the western horizon are still tinted vibrant dark pink and deep purple shades, mirrored on the very slightly rippled lake surface below. A partially submerged rock a few feet offshore and the entire wooded far shore of the lake are silhouetted black in the dim light.

    Two suns converge sunset. Scoville Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. April 18, 2020, 7:06 PM.

    The evening sky is a pale blue gray. We are standing beside a rippling stream, bankfull from April showers. A short distance ahead through the leafless trees we see a portion of the lake into which the stream is about to empty its waters. Other than patches of moss and a few stray blades of new grass there is not much green going on yet in the forest surrounding the stream and the lake. The lack of leaves allows us to watch the bright pale orange sun setting behind the trees and its reflection on the lake below slowly converge.

    Passing thunderstorm sunset, Scoville Reservoir, Wolcott, Connecticut. June 3, 2020, 7:16 PM.

    Standing beside a cluster of trees growing together as one large tree leaning out over a lake. A stray raindrop makes a single ripple in the lake beside me. The sky above me, also reflected in the lake, is partly cloudy. Above the wooded far shore, thunderheads that missed me by a few miles to the south are tinted pale gold and orange by the setting sun.
