Cannon finds that Trump has not made the requisite showing that the search warrant affidavit contains "any material false statements or omissions." As such, he doesn't get a Franks hearing. #legal

Hi Trump.

The FBI just announced that crime has plummeted in the first quarter of 2024:

According to the report:

Murder decreased by 26.4%
Rape decreased by 25.7%
Robbery decreased by 17.8%
Aggravated assault decreased by 12.5%
Reported property crime decreased by 15.1%

I am glad that violent and property crime is down. It was not my point to diminish that. I am just frustrated that crimes like wage theft and political corruption are often regarded as inconsequential.

"Colonies found under items on the ground can be drenched with a few ounces of insecticide."

Very disappointed to see that TA&MU is recommending "treating" Dorymyrmex bureni ant colonies. These ants love to attack and eat invasive fire ant queens and do not infest human dwellings. They are not pest ants, but one of the most valuable & charming native species. I wonder what other beneficial native insects are also on the kill list of the Agricultural & Life Sciences website! A question on Canadian History.

I teach for new graduate students in US history an historiography seminar, where I assign 2 articles/chapters per session. And I'd very much like to include articles on Canada, 19th & 20th century. They're becoming good critical readers of scholarship, but know nothing about Canadian history (except what I did with them on early modern period). Any recommendations?

What are your thoughts on DNF (Did Not Finish)-ing books? Do you feel guilty about it? Do you worry you missed out on something? Or are you confident in dropping a book and reaching for the next one?

At what point are you most likely to DNF, if ever? What sorts of things cause you to DNF?

My friend, book blogger Kriti, was musing on these questions a while back, and it sparked this new post: https://armedwithabook.com/dealing-with-dnf-the-practice-of-did-not-finish/

I only remember three books which I DNF'ed.

    1. Quicksilver, I wasn't willing to go another run through the weeds with Neal Stephenson.
    2. Digital Fortress, flawed premise and unbelievable characters.
    3. The Streets of Laredo, McMurtry pissed me off in chapter 2, by making the fate of the Hat Creek crew even worse.

I'm usually pretty choosy about what I read. I spent a while investigating what versions of Don Quixote (Rutherford), The Iliad and Odyssey (Fagles), and Ulysses (1961, Vintage Publishing).

Right now I've been working on reading the books that many were forced to read in school. I just finished the revised edition of All the King's Men and I'm starting Watership Down.

Before buying an alleged translation ask yourself (and do the research): does the purpoted translator know the source language?

Before heeding the plaudits of a review of a translation (or of a "translation"), ask yourself (and do the the research): does the reviewer know the source language?

A "translation" by someone who doesn't know the source language is a (perfectly legitimate) retelling by an insecure writer (best case).

A review by someone who doesn't know the source language is only semi-competent as a review.
