Just a quick overview of different social media platforms, the word decentralized, and what it means.

In my opinion, decentralization requires 2 parts: the spread of data over multiple sources AND your complete control of where that data is distributed.

That being said, Fediverse IS decentralized because there's 20,000+ instances that can host the data AND can control where that data goes, if they want. This still means that you have to run an instance to have complete control, but running an instance is cheap and easy enough.

Nostr is also decentralized with your data going to hundreds of relays, but the control just isn't there. On Nostr, instead of instances exclusively hosting the data, there's relays that each user has to connect to. You can choose which "relays" have that at first. However, if anyone from your relay is also connected to another relay and boosts your posts, it will get relayed. Also, there's no surefire way to edit or delete content on Nostr. Some apps let you "request" a deletion, but it's not certain that it will be honored.

Threads is NOT decentralized because even though they allow sharing TO the Fediverse, there's currently no way to control which instances will see that data. There is blocking for individual users, but with a decentralized platform like Fedi, that's not enough.

BlueSky, on the other hand, is NOT decentralized by default. You CAN have control of your data if you host a PDS, but that data can only be used on BlueSky right now. There is the 3rd party "BridgyFed" that users can use to federate their posts to Fediverse, but beyond blocking individual users, BridgyFed is in control of which instances will get that data.

All-in-all, Fediverse is currently the only social media platform which allows nearly full control over your data and where it goes. This platform is the future. I just hope everyone else sees it that way soon enough.

@BeAware I always felt like bluesky was kind of twitter 2.0, I feel a lot of the smugness of twitter has somehow wound up there. I feel no real urge to interact. I made accounts there more or less to set up myself and streaming channel cause I thought it might be something like fedi but I just don't feel the same kind of...connection I would here

Some people argue for the sake of arguing.

What the heck is the point? If you see something you disagree with, you don't always have to confront that person.

You can just scroll past. It's true! Try it sometimes and I bet you'll feel better about not arguing with people 24/7!

@BeAware In all fairness to them, we are sort of trained to "punch back" in internet culture, it's not looked well upon here. But, from the birdsite it is a common and expected occurance. I'm not defending it but just saying we have people still trying to adapt. Old habits die hard and all. But, yes you can just scroll past and also mute posts you don't like and live a very good life as a result

    @BeAware I had a lot of stuff planned to work on yesterday morning, but my body went "Bruv, you need to sleep" So I slept till like 9 am when I wanted to be up at 6

    Ya know...all the fear mongering on Fedi is starting to tire people out...

    Lots of people just don't want to be here anymore because of the way a lot of Fedi users treat normal everyday things as EVILLLLLL!!!

    You're doing the very thing you fear the most when you talk shit about Threads (and other things most of you deem evil) and pushing people to those platforms.

    I am on both and literally seeing it. I have users that follow me on both platforms that say they're considering leaving Fedi because of how normal it is there.

    No brigading. No blatant misinformation. No bullshit drama about Fediblock. Just normal, SOCIAL media.

    So, those defederating from people that federate with Threads are literally and already killing the platform you claim to love so much...🤦‍♂️🤬

    A lot of you need to look in the mirror.

    @BeAware honestly most people come here when Twitter does something dumb, the ones that stay it does turn into an echo chamber. I try not to let it derail the fun I have and the cool shit I see though, but I'm weird

    @CWSmith @BeAware yeah, much like the other sites the politics don't define it unless you want it to. Everything is hyper political anymore and I'll shoot my mouth off, but that's why sites like this have a mute/block option
