My dad was an electrician in the IBEW union. That job paid for my college education. I got a computer science degree with no debt. I was able to take a risk moving to Silicon Valley and write Automate the Boring Stuff with Python in my spare time. I remember where I came from and whose shoulders I stood on.

America works best when we say UNION YES.

I'm looking to hire someone to redesign the http://automatetheboringstuff.com site. I want a lightweight site that uses static files, has a clean look like Wikipedia, without React or animated nonsense. Boring is good.

Any recommendations? Any advice on how to hire a web designer?

@AlSweigart I'll do it. Check https://www.zip-tokens.com/ for a site that I did. It's probably fancier than you want but I can also resurrect and send you a little Hugo site that's more in line, if you want to see that one instead. That's just the easy one that's live. DM me if you like the idea.

Pro-tip: dish washing detergent is a really basic chemical.

Just buy the absolute cheapest powder kind.

There's only one industry in modern capitalism:

Selling hot tubs to frogs.

On this date in 1856, John Brown and a group of militant abolitionists killed 5 pro-slavery settlers in Kansas.

This was in response to a violent attack on the city of Lawrence by pro-slavery terrorists. It became part of what was later known as Bleeding Kansas.

What's funny about the "put glue on pizza" advice from Google AI is that that screenshot could have easily been faked... but you can't prove the AI didn't make this recommendation.

CAPITALISM: Competition ensures that companies are constantly striving to offer superior products at lower prices.

ACTUAL CAPITALISM:

@AlSweigart It's like @pluralistic says: capitalists actually hate capitalism, and always try by all means to avoid dealing with pesky competition

What is your honest, first gut reaction to hearing someone describe themselves as a "digital artist"? (Feel free to PM me if you don't want to reply publicly.)

Hey, did you realize you could play chess online (or really, any board game with any number of people) with Google Slides? Just invite them to edit the slidedeck:

I've added color schemes to my Scroll Art website. Here's the "test tube" color scheme:

Check it out yourself in the browser and also look at the other scroll art pieces on the website: https://scrollart.org/static/diamond-sky-fullscreen.html

I'm in NYC and I visited Penn Station today. It's a good metaphor for America because it's new and shiny and recently remodeled but everyone is sitting on the floor because benches would attract homeless people.

"Scroll art" is a form of program-generated ASCII art that beginners can do in any language with minimal knowledge that creates something cooler than interest rate payments. I've collected a few examples online here: https://scrollart.org
