Now that accounts can be followed on via the protocol & vice versa, we find that Threads posts seen on Mastodon looks like Mastodon posts & on Threads, Mastodon posts look like Threads posts. prioritizes content over platform.

This flips the current paradigm, where each micro-blogging platform distinguishes itself from its competitors with specific policies & features. Interoperability could commodify platforms, so all they offer is presence.

Very worthwhile read on the fallacy, yes fallacy of "if you're not paying, you are the product".

@pluralistic argues that this implies you have some power from paying because you can stop.

But the reality is different: if you are locked in you won't stop so your payments have no leverage. So we can't make companies behave by putting for services.

The key is freedom from lock in, and . That's what would help, not being able to pay for privacy.

A decade ago, a third-party plug-in known as “Selective Tweets” let you choose which tweets would also publish as your status.
