I'm seeing the most incredible photos of the eclipse from this afternoon. This one stands out. Photo credit is right on the photo.

@mountainwitch Truly amazing. The last full solar eclipse I saw was back in Iran in 1976. It was amazing, my father had prepared special glasses for al of us from his welding equipment, we all watched it without knowing that it was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

SOLAR ECLIPSE 2024

"AURE FREE PRESS staff walked outside of our office, donned our approved eclipse glasses and were blown away by the majesty that is our world.

MAYBE, just maybe, this will remind mankind that we are but a hitchhiker on this wonderful planet and we should treat it better ♥️♥️

Let's give the universe a big thumbs up 👍"

I didn't have a pair of glasses but I had something WAY cooler... a camera obscura!

The moon went in front of the sun

There were some clouds, but I managed to catch a usable photo or two

Are you excited for
? A total solar
has always been a big event and Alice Thornton (1626-1707) wrote about her experience in 1652. While you are waiting for the big moment, have a read of this post by our project postdoc, Jo Edge: https://thornton.kdl.kcl.ac.uk/posts/blog/2022-10-25-black-monday-solar-eclipse-1652/

That is SO cool. Huge thanks for posting it. Am excited for totality here in Vermont today — and we’ve 160,000 guests!! Except in the Grateful Dead era, we don’t pull those kinds of numbers, it’s 1/4 of our low population. Streams of sun loving traffic!

“So that’s where you look for aliens. In the course of an eclipse totality track. When everybody else is looking awestruck at the sky, you need to be looking round for anybody who looks weird or overdressed, or who isn’t coming out of their RV or their moored yacht with the heavily smoked glass.”

Where to look for tourists – from Iain (M) Banks’s 2009 novel TRANSITION

@scotlit @bookstodon if you pay very close attention and look out for people acting in the strangest ways at the most mundane of things, looking completely and utterly out of place while they do, you will see them everywhere!

    My favorite image from ?

This visualization of the Saros 139 cycle to which the eclipse belongs showing similar eclipses from 1501 to 2763. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_Saros_139

The sky looked like this most of the time here, but I did get to see the eclipse at peak, almost 90%. Weirdly, nobody else around me had eclipse glasses or was paying the slightest attention to the sky.
