Maple leaves are famously celebrated at the end of their short life, when they bow out in spectacular yellows and reds...but their appearance in Kyōto is also cause for cheer.

In late spring, during rainy days, the fresh maple leaves glow dazzling green.
The main gate at Konkaikomyo-ji, framed in brilliant red and green leaves. Some species of maple trees stay red year round.
In the tearoom sweets take on a leafy theme (a firm jelly made to look like a green maple leaf, and a wafer emblazoned with a wild ginger leaf).
