Everything is a post-election ploy and definitely not motivated by plain old economics. China is the largest economy in Asia and has the largest tourism base in Asia (and possibly the world?).
The DPP seems to have forgotten that realpolitik exists.
I am rather surprised that Nauru would break ties, since it's commonly known as being part of the Western sphere of influence.
