Fuck Ryan Walters. He threatened to remove the accreditation of Tulsa Public Schools because the superintendent refused to outright ban critical race theory, so she was forced to resign.

Oklahoma is a complete shithole state

Really wish my nephew wasn’t being raised there

KevonLooney ,

Sure. There's lots of cool literary history and Near East history around the Bible. Will they be teaching the whole history, starting from the original polytheist tradition, moving to Yahweh-centric monolatry, and transitioning to monotheism?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahwism

chicken ,

As an atheist, I'm glad I had to read the Bible for school because I probably wouldn't have realized on my own just how useful having read the Bible is for objecting to religion.

Polls show Trump's lead widening. Biden has failed for a week now to show voters that he hasn't beat medicare. No drugs or alcohol here... Just straight up reality. You'd have to be on drugs to think otherwise, unless he steps aside.

ThirdWorldOrder ,
@ThirdWorldOrder@lemm.ee avatar

Schools have tried this bullshit in the past and have been beat at the Supreme Court level. The only thing that can stop this is once again the Supreme Court - which has nothing to do with the dems.

riodoro1 ,

Couldn’t Biden nominate more judges and maybe temporarily get the institution that wants to crown trump under control?

ThirdWorldOrder ,
@ThirdWorldOrder@lemm.ee avatar

Then what’s to stop the next incumbent from doing that until we have 1,000 justices? The US is a nation that loves to establish precedent so I can see why no one wants to mess with the issue.

There does need to be reform but that has to come from Congress. They have been a bit busy sharing pictures of hunter bidens penis lately to give a shit about things that matter to their constituents.

riodoro1 ,

Well if he doesn’t do nothing the next incumbent will not need any justices anymore. Desperate times call for desperate measures and thought out reforms might have to wait until there is no real and imminent threat of authoritarianism taking over.
The time for reforms was in the 80’s and 90’s Now its time for consequences because those didn’t happen.

ThirdWorldOrder ,

A tale as old as time (or Biden)

riodoro1 ,

Oh for fucks sake. It’s you who has to be drunk to tell us that Biden and the dems are handling the campaign well.

They’re as sloppy as they were with Clinton, or even more so and without any other choice that makes them kinda responsible for trump leading the polls. They are relying on people with IQ over 80 who know that the only right choice is not trump, but there are a lot of people who still need to be convinced and they are doing the opposite.

ThirdWorldOrder ,
@ThirdWorldOrder@lemm.ee avatar

What does teaching the Bible in schools have to do with Biden or the dems?

I completely understand your frustrations, trust me. This is a state issue which I have no doubt will get kicked up to the SC.

Even if you had the next greatest democratic nominee, that wouldn’t affect the situation regarding this post.

riodoro1 ,

What does teaching the Bible in schools have to do with Biden or the dems?

Isn’t Biden the sitting president of a country in which Oklahoma is located?

ThirdWorldOrder ,
@ThirdWorldOrder@lemm.ee avatar

Good question. It’s a judicial issue not an executive one. It’s also a state issue and not a federal one. There are no King’s in the USA.

riodoro1 ,

… yet

Omega_Man ,

So against n, how is this Biden and the Dems fault? Why inot the people who are pushing for this?

timewarp ,
@timewarp@lemmy.world avatar

I think you're wrong on both fronts here. The executive branch executes the law. The First Amendment is being violated. That isn't a state law, but a violation of federal law. Democrats need wins to fix it but they ran a terrible candidate like in 2016.

ThirdWorldOrder ,
@ThirdWorldOrder@lemm.ee avatar

You are absolutely correct that it is a First amendment, federal law, being violated and that the executive branch has a role enforcing it.

As I said however, we are a land of precedent and it’s up to the judicial interpretations of the First amendment. Historically, this is how these matters have always been handled..

As far as what could Biden do.. well I’m not sure if it would make much difference.

  1. Set guidelines with the Dept of Education. Doubtful that this would have any impact. There’s probably already something there regarding this
  2. Funding. They could do what the executive branch did with alcohol laws and withhold funding from things like roads until compliance is met. I would say you could withhold money from schools but obviously that’s not really fair to the kids and the republicans probably want that anyway
  3. They could bring lawsuits through the DoJ. Likely the best course of action but there’s already lawsuits filed that are gonna end up being kicked up to the SC I bet

Probably some other things that I’m not thinking of right now since I’m drinking beer but you get the idea

timewarp ,
@timewarp@lemmy.world avatar

Didn't the Supreme Court just say Biden could execute the Supreme Court justices for being terrorist and he'd have immunity?

ThirdWorldOrder ,
@ThirdWorldOrder@lemm.ee avatar

Well, yeah. Sinking down to their level makes us no better really. Not that I don’t enjoy thinking about that

snekerpimp ,

Ummm it’s Project 2025 that will put us there. Thought up by conservative think tank “The Heritage Foundation”. John Oliver did a good one on it, it’s pretty fucking scary

Melatonin , (edited )

I'm no conservative, but John Oliver does more to perpetuate the "smug liberal" stereotype than anyone else.

You know what message most of conservative America has received and rejected?

"Shut up you ignorant cow and do what I told you, because I'm obviously smarter and better informed than you are! Just listen to the facts!"

It works really well when delivered with a British accent. Trevor Noah and John Oliver are helping polarize many potential progressive voters.

Can we not find an intelligent Midwestern or Country progressive to bring humor and information but also IDENTIFICATION and UNDERSTANDING?

Ah but fuck them, right? Who needs their votes, if their unable to see past world culture?

We do. We need their votes. Don't be a dumbass.

HelixDab2 ,

The people Oliver and Noah are making fun of aren't the centrist conservatives; they're not shitting all over the ones that can be reached and could be expected to learn and grow as humans.

Twitches ,

So... I will admit I'm not the best at interpreting things sometimes, but, your post almost sounds like you are saying intelligence and fact-finding is making people feel stupid and attacked? Do documentaries make people feel stupid and attacked too? I'm confused, is this what you were getting at?

Edit: I have watched John Oliver and Trevor Noah not a big fan of Trevor Noah, but, I never really got this message from them I never felt like they were trying to be hostile with their message

BassTurd ,

Your right, and OPs claim boils down to, uneducated people get upset by not understanding what educated people are talking about. That's why Republicans want to continue degrading the education system, because uneducated people are easier to manipulate and control.

Promethiel ,
@Promethiel@lemmy.world avatar

In case your statement wasn't actually carefully crafted to make your point (kudos if so!): Yeah, you got it right.

That was a post correctly identifying the problem of the decades long rising anti-intellectualism cultured amidst the populace (See Carl Sagan's excellent and chillingly prescient "I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time..." quote).

Said post then really had the gall to not just take all agency from the willfully ignorant alongside their responsibility, but it then goes further to state that the fault lies with the non-willfully ignorant.

Then it suggests that the non-willfully ignorant are in fact being willfully ignorant to the fact that they have to (I had to pause and re-read here, the weight of the author's cojones was throwing me off) locate simpler and/or rougher folk more like 'The Midwestern' to do the messaging in a more "relatable" (air quotes) way.

I admit, my born and raised through the abject poverty and bare unfinished construction found the world around from the Favelas to the heights of Appalachia was quite "ready to slap a smarmy ass city fucker" by the end there.

But then I realized: If not maliciously posted then clearly they may not realize it. They may actually think that the miseducation, furthering divide, and increasing tensions amongst those who consider themselves team "knows better about feelings" and those who consider themselves team "feels better about knowing" have anything to do with the direct interactions between the two groups, and not the reality: The messaging being bought and paid for.

Who benefits from the poors not realizing that the scope and limits of their wits are quite the same human potential as the inhabit of any gilded tower?

That post was saying that intelligence and fact-finding is making people feel stupid and attacked, but it failed to correctly attribute that to the fact that people are being told and taught to feel that way, as part of the ever present real issue.

That is what being willfully ignorant of the fact you're carrying water for the sick and mentally twisted Billionaires who remember the human mental potential and must live constantly suppressing it in terror of the alternative, looks like.

Melatonin , (edited )

"Willfully ignorant"...

There's your problem. You don't recognize the PRIVILEGE you have, being the intelligence you are. 2/3s of IQs are between 85 and 115, one standard deviation each way. I'd say almost ALL of the people here on Lemmy have IQs in the teens. Maybe you don't grasp the VAST CHASM between 115 and 85.

IQs fall on a bell curve. 100 is average. It will always be average, because it's adjusted to be average. 70 and below is intellectually disabled, and 79 and lower is borderline intellectually disabled. Not because they're "willfully ignorant." Because that's the limit of their ability.

Someone with a lower IQ isn't REJECTING your presentations of fact and logic, or the witty sarcasm of progressive late-night hosts. They physically CAN'T UNDERSTAND THEM.

Try teaching a special needs class and tell me about "willful ignorance". Or just fill a classroom with failing students and teach them something political.

Maybe you think they won't be trying hard enough? Maybe you think they're just lazy?

That sounds a lot like conservatives talking about poor people.

snekerpimp ,

Who hurt you?

BassTurd ,

So uneducated people are upset because they don't understand concepts that educated people are discussing. Unfortunately, the country can't put complex matters on hold to write it out in crayon for all of the Republicans.

Melatonin ,

"Think of how stupid the average person is, and half of them are stupider than that!"

George Carlin

You need stupid people to win an election. What can I say? That's my premise.

Milk_Sheikh ,

America still has universal suffrage. They also get to vote, and treating them like knuckleheads only affirms the ‘coastal elites’ or ‘flyover country’ memes.

So we can say “they’re too dumb to be informed voters” but they still get to be voters. Act accordingly and try to reach those who haven’t fallen too far down the rabbit hole, or the Republicans get to herd them all as a group

timewarp ,
@timewarp@lemmy.world avatar

So Democrats have no responsibilities to actually pick candidates that can actually help them win elections? If you tell millions of people that you're going to race two people to decide what conditions they love under, and you pick the blind guy or one with no legs... You're saying picking a bad nominee is the other teams fault?

snekerpimp ,

What the hell are you even talking about??? You seem to just be angry and projecting on everything. Do you even know what thread you are replying to? How do democrats have anything to do with policy the republicans are coming up with and implementing?

Great example of gish galloping though.

timewarp ,
@timewarp@lemmy.world avatar

I think what you're asking is despite the DNC getting caught sabotaging their best candidate in 2016 and helping fascism rise into power by ignoring who their own people wanted, why Christan nationalism is actually a thing. The answer is because when psychology was being studied the doctors ignored a major mental illness because most of the doctor's at the time also had the mental illness, and the ones that didn't but wrote about it would be declared to have a mental illness because of the mental illness the other doctors had. And now we have a brunch of doctors too worried about being politically correct to label the belief and talking to things that aren't there as a mental illness, and to call the church that does conversion therapy a cult.

snekerpimp ,

Ok…. And what happened,happened. Arguing about how we got here doesn’t help. Talking about what is happening NOW is how we fix this. Again, your anger is misplaced at what happened almost a decade ago. Redirect it to the present.

timewarp ,
@timewarp@lemmy.world avatar

What happened happened, it doesn't matter how we got here. We can make the same mistakes and get the same results, but it doesn't matter... really?

snekerpimp ,

Wow. You read what you want. Marking you as a troll, and ignoring.

KillerTofu ,

Found the troll! Not like it was hard to spot but ignore this kind of shit post.

timewarp ,
@timewarp@lemmy.world avatar

What am I trolling about? Biden is down in the polls and couldn't even form coherent sentences during the debate. This is 2016 all over again with Democrats ignoring voters. You don't like right-wing populism but ignore that Democrats continually pick candidates that are most likely to lose.

BassTurd ,

Which democrat pushed for this legislation? None? Oh so it's not the Democrats, it's the Republicans that are pushing this. What a stupid fucking comment. Democrats aren't perfect, but to at all suggest they are the party at fault for any of this is asinine.

Maybe start calling out the actual offenders. Don't bother talking about how the Dems haven't done anything to stop it. They aren't the ones writing and inactive these laws, it's not their policy, it's not their actions, it's Republicans.

timewarp ,
@timewarp@lemmy.world avatar

I mean they should do something to stop it since Biden is the President and it is clearly against the First Amendment, but he's been pretty busy holed up at Camp David taking advice from Hunter Biden if be should stay in the race after revealing that he's subdowning during the terrible debate performance.
