Oh, that's not a new tactic.

goferking0 ,

According to Pelosi they could also be Chinese bad actors :/

metaStatic ,

Like Jackie Chan?

Imagine thinking Rush Hour 2 isn't the greatest cinematic achievement of the century.

metaStatic ,

He didn't make any good movies in the west. This is just an objective fact.

Also, he can be all three things without being all of them at once.

MxM111 ,

One category is missing - useful idiots.

spujb OP ,

*Two categories. Don’t forget the useless idiots, which include myself naturally.

MxM111 ,

Nah, those are fine. You including :)

Melkath ,

The line they use is Tankies and Russian Bots.

Blue MAGA. Amirite?

spujb OP , (edited )

‘Blue MAGA’ and ‘Tankies’ come in to play too for sure, but I’d say are 1 tier below ‘bots’ and ‘shills’ as far as denying humanity and autonomy.

But ye :)

edit: i think i misunderstood your comment in some way, oops. i retract my ye

Leate_Wonceslace ,

Your cumulative karma for the past week is, at time of making this comment, -122.

Wow. Yeah. So unreasonable that anyone here would accuse anyone else of being a Russian Bot. 🙄

Melkath ,

I find it cute that you use the federverse imaginary internet points like the Chinese social point system, then proceed to carry an anti-Tankie tone.

But for reference, I am on an instance that doesn't count the Blue MAGA dominated Lemmy and Mbin instances votes, so I have only accumulated like 7 downvotes in the past week and far more upvotes.

But keep sucking your Blue MAGA dick.

Leate_Wonceslace ,

I'll add homophobia to the list of reasons to disregard your opinions.

Also, -125. ☺ Fun Fact: -125 is -5^3

Karma's definitely not a perfect way to track if someone's genuine or not, but you need to be consistently and impressively awful to get numbers like that.

livus ,

I don't have a dog in this fight but I do want to point out a flaw in your reasoning. The fediverse is way different than reddit when it comes to karma.

  • not all instances have karma
  • of those that have it, not all instances federate it
  • there isn't a cross-instance hivemind so if your downvotes come from, say, Hexbear it doesn't mean the same thing as say, Lemmy.world
  • therefore, where you spend your time affects your various scores

I'm on Kbin which does not federate downvotes. We can only see downvotes if they are from other Kbin accounts, and they're also public. Downvotes from us are often to indicate spam or trolling, but only we can see them.

Leate_Wonceslace ,

Thank you! This is really informative.

An "Appeal to extremes" argument specifies that extremes are all that exist - no middle ground allowed. Similarly, the "No true Scotsman" one says that likewise, nobody truly disagrees, at least nobody who matters. Next, why would we consider it okay to use slurs, even/especially against bots - it's not like saying anything like that will change their minds, but literal children are watching the exchange, and it could change theirs?

Anyway: they will do their thing, but what you are responsible for is doing yours, so your response to them is 100% on you. Do with that what you will.

aodhsishaj ,

Don't forget also the straw manning that's been happening for a while as well.

MxM111 ,

I propose to create a league of bot defenders (LoBD) to fight for the bot’s right not to be called names.

OpenStars ,
@OpenStars@discuss.online avatar

It shall be called LolBaD, and it shall mean League of... well anyway, it shall be called LolBaD, okay!? :-P

ynazuma ,

As would be said by a paid Russian or an AI bot…or someone that has said a lot of dumb things, and is now saying one more

spujb OP ,

Tough words to be tossing around as a 1 day old account :P

ynazuma ,

I got more

spujb OP ,

Bro you’ve already got mod action on your account for throwing around slurs. This post is about you, best not try your luck.

ynazuma ,

Im trying my luck now

What up?

Good to see that the genocidal dems that shoved out most of the voter base are working as hard as possible to match their red compatriots.

AI bots and paid actors are the exception, rather than the rule.

Now, useful idiots who amplify the talking points pushed by paid actors? Those are a dime a dozen.

    spujb OP ,

I’m usually on team Pug on this platform but I’m gonna push back a little. I think there’s a lot more diversity and genuinely held beliefs out there than you think.

And yes, genuinely held beliefs can be influenced by paid actors. Yet I still think it’s a misstep to categorize everything malformedly bad into the useful idiot category.

    PugJesus ,
    @PugJesus@lemmy.world avatar

I guess where we disagree is probably more at how common certain talking points become. We, as social creatures, naturally adopt the mannerisms and at least some of the outlooks of our communities - thus, sowing specific points of view in a niche community is a very cost-effective and practical way of amplifying propaganda.

Of course, as the saying goes, "You are not immune to propaganda". It's something we all must be aware of, lest we become (or remain) useful idiots ourselves.

    spujb OP ,

I’m with you. I think !politicalmemes in particular is just very vulnerable to forgetting the human on the other side of the screen and I’m trying to call that out because it spreads quite quickly to the rest of the platform as we saw with some of the recent misogyny stuff.

Like, looking at the vote count now it seems like genuinely ~half of this community thinks that bot action is more likely than, as you say, useful idiots and similar.

Other platforms like TikTok and Instagram, for all their flaws, at least have an ever present face element, proving every moment to the user that the other person is living and breathing and may or may not have had breakfast this morning. That’s something that Lemmy lacks to an extreme degree, in a parallel fashion to Twitter, Reddit, et al.

Politically, human dignity is important to me. There is room for that discussion of humanity and autonomy, but it’s certainly not foremost of all. Human dignity cannot manifest if we begin and end conversations by calling into question whether there’s a human capable of making decisions on the other end of the line.
