/ Freed Gaza hospital head accuses Israel of repeated torture

The head of al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, Mohammed Abu Salmiya, has accused Israel of subjecting him and other detainees to "almost daily torture" while they were held without charge for up to seven months. Abu Salmiya was among dozens of Palestinians released by Israeli authorities on Monday. Other freed detainees have also alleged abuse during their detention.

[cont'd] Al-Shifa Hospital director set free from Israeli torture camp: ‘Even doctors abuse us’

The Cradle often challenges mainstream Western narratives, but if we've learned anything so far, it's that these narratives need to be challenged. The claim that Israeli doctors are complicit in physical abuse tantamount to torture is discussed in Israeli media as well.

“As you may recall, Israel’s Ministry of Health declared that detained Gazans would not be treated in public hospitals and would instead be transferred to medical facilities operated by the Israel Prison Service or the military - regardless of whether these facilities were equipped to provide adequate care. Subsequently, the ministry issued medical treatment guidelines, which, as our report concludes, violate medical ethics and disregard the fundamental principles of the healthcare professions. These guidelines were reinforced by medical professionals who supported the refusal to treat detained Gazans, even when they were brought in by the military. The report cautions that in light of the current circumstances at the facility, its medical personnel risk committing severe breaches of medical ethics.”

@oatmeal @prolrage @israel @palestine Torture of prisoners is newsworthy and Hague-worthy in its own right, but wasn't this guy imprisoned in the first place because Israel claimed he had turned his facilities over to Hamas as a military base? Now released without charge, what does that say about their pretexts for many of the crimes committed.

is currently "investigating" 48 cases of Palestinian deaths, most of which involved prisoners captured in the Gaza Strip. However, no charges have been filed or cases closed in any of these deaths.

Of the known Palestinian deaths, 36 are being held in the Sde Dov prison, two were on their way there, two were transferred to detention facilities, one was detained in the Gaza Strip, and one was a woman who approached the Israeli military near the border fence.

According to IDF sources, 70 criminal investigations have been opened since the beginning of the conflict, including cases of abuse, assault, weapons theft, and violence.

IDF sources say that six of the remaining cases involve deaths in the Gaza Strip that violated military orders, either on the way from or during interrogation in Israel.

An IDF source who spoke to said that as of now, none of the individuals involved in the cases have been found in detention.
