#Israel boycott / FIFA to seek legal advice on Palestinian proposal to suspend Israel from international soccer
The Palestinian request for suspending #Israel was not rejected outright, but rather postponed pending a legal assessment process and a subsequent #FIFA Council meeting within the next two months.
Instead of putting it to a vote at the FIFA Congress in Bangkok, FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced that the matter will be reviewed by independent legal experts first. Their assessment and recommendations will then be forwarded to the FIFA Council, which will convene an extraordinary meeting before July 20, 2024, to make a decision based on the legal review.
Unlike an academic boycott, a suspension from international soccer would have a broader and more visible impact on Israel, as soccer has a wider appeal and following, possibly making a suspension from FIFA a more impactful measure. Netanyahu’s supporters will find difficult to live with.
