I got a coin recently, and I wonder if you can guess where it is from? Some things about it:

  • It is dated 1776
  • It wasn't expensive, not gold or silver, or a pattern etc
  • It's a small, regular issue coin from where it is from
  • It's an interesting denomination

Can you guess?

Oh I'd be happy to have one certainly! But you are right, it's not the Pewter Continental Dollar.

I did get to cover pewter a little on the site recently, talking about bismuth and then finding a medallion which was made of pewter. Actually that medallion will get you closer to my coin than the USA...

Here's a clue. Someone mentioned the Pewter Continental Dollar from the USA. My 1776 coin is not that, but thinking about pewter, I posted a pewter medallion on the site recently... That will get you closer to the coin than the USA.

Oh, and it's not pewter, but it is an alloy: billon (I did say it was not a precious metal. Technically it has silver in it. I would have guessed it was simply a copper coin before looking it up.)

@CoinOfNote @histodons @numismatics I’m going to guess Ukraine or the Soviet Union. Seems like a communist idea to put factories and plows on your coins.

Definitely the right thinking there! You'd find factories, and plows, all over the world of course, but there are some places much more likely to feature that imagery on their coins.
