The skill of the medieval silversmith & the modern stonecarvers was celebrated in a third medium with our project mementos! These were made by Cameron Newham FSA, using photogrammetry, 3D-printing, & handpainting. Tiny medieval treasures & large stone sculptures are both hard to move: these small replicas are a delight!

Close up of the resin memento. It's a pointed oval or vesica shape, with legend 'Aulam Clare Pia Pege Semper Virgo Maria' (Aulam being abbreviated with a macron). The Lady of Clare in the centre holds the foundation document with its large pendent seal in her right hand, & the book of statutes in her left. She is presenting these to the kneeling Master & Fellows. Above are the Virgin Mary & Child Jesus, St John the Baptist holding an Agnus Dei, & St John the Evangelist with his eagle. The shield at the bottom represents the final arms of the Lady of Clare, adopted from then onwards by the college. To left & right are the royal arms of England & of Leon & Castile, representing the Lady's maternal grandparents, Edward I & Eleanor of Castile.

The seal, first used in 1359, is "an extraordinary depiction of female vision, & female faith in the importance of education, & a woman's power & ability to accomplish that vision... We have one of the world's greatest stonecutters a mile up the road, who also happens to be a woman."

In 2020 we published a 2nd edition of the definitive biography of the - & then we learned more about the evolution of her heraldic & visual identity. New insights came from archaeology, from archives, & from drawing & carving which brought details from hands to eyes. The front covers of two books, "For Her Good Estate: The Life of Elizabeth de Burgh, Lady of Clare" by Frances A. Underhill, and "The Clare College Seal & the Making of the Seal Sculpture", by Claire Barnes, Lida Lopes Cardozo Kindersley & Jacqueline Tasioulas. The 18th-century portrait of the Lady of Clare by Joseph Freeman appears on both books. The seal cover includes images of the medieval silver seal matrix, with its contemporary depiction of the lady's figure as she presents the foundation charter and statues to the kneeling Master & Fellows of the College, under the protection of Our Lady & Child & relevant saints, and the modern stone carving in progress.
