The motif of a seated young girl dates to a late Hellenistic model, which in the Roman version was supplemented by the game gesture. The astragalus (knucklebone) game is often depicted on funerary reliefs. Together with the portrait-like features of the girls, this motif suggests a sepulchral purpose of the sculpture.
