Does sci-fi shape the future? Tech billionaires from Bill Gates to Elon Musk have often talked about the impact of novels they read as teens, from Neal Stephenson's "Snow Crash" to Iain M. Banks' "Culture" series. Big Think's Namir Khaliq spoke to authors including Andy Weir, Lois McMaster Bujold and @pluralistic about how much impact they think science fiction has had, or can have.

@CultureDesk @pluralistic @bookstodon @cstross It's weird how these billionaires haven't figured out that they're the bad guys in these novels.

@CultureDesk @pluralistic @bookstodon @cstross If either Gates or Musk read Snowcrash as a teenager, that would be a huge boon for sci-fi. Specially, time travel sci-fi.

@CultureDesk It's a very topical question regarding the sub-genres or , and . The latter experiments with positive changes.

But it becomes extremely creepy when you take a closer look at how mix sci-fi with radical right-wing eugenics ideas and knit an anti-democratic ideology out of it. @NatureMC @CultureDesk @pluralistic @bookstodon You mean a culture that grew out of weapons research and collaborated with actual former nazi scientists has right-leaning fascist tendancies?

Shocking.

People tend to forget the DARPA and defense roots of most of the silicon valley. It's not a friendly or happy history, and it's a deep culture of scams, schemes, and rewarding bad behavior.

We can do better. We need to do better.

@CultureDesk @pluralistic @bookstodon I don't Elon Musk has properly read any of those books, ESPECIALLY the Culture Novels.

That vision of the Future is one the transphobe Elon would hate.
