Just taking a moment to say that, although the evils of 19th century imperialism are hopefully obvious by now, the writing in this book is almost obscenely brilliant. Not a hint of gung-ho aggrandisement, yet acknowledging the undeniable courage, skills, and outright chutzpah of the key players, it also manages to shed light on contemporary international politics despite being from 1990.
