It's #BlackHistoryMonth, and we are using this time to spotlight influential Black people in Transportation. Rev TJ Jemison got involved in civil rights when the city enforced segregated seating on buses. ( kbin.social )
He challenged this by testifying against fare increases and unequal seating, leading to the passing of Ordinance 222.
Facing harassment, he tested the law by sitting in a front seat, resulting in a strike and legal challenges. Jemison organized a free-ride network during the boycott, which lasted eight days and led to negotiations reinstating a segregated seating system.
Jemison's boycott model influenced the Montgomery bus boycott in 1955.
