@easysociology @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite wtf... "more cops" is a sociologist's solution?

@thomkennon @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite

Not sure where it says that but hey ho!

"4. Enhancing Law Enforcement: Improving law enforcement capabilities, cooperation between agencies, and international collaboration can help combat illicit activities associated with the black economy."

@easysociology @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite

"Enhanced " is neoliberal for "more".

@thomkennon @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite

Ok, I can see where you are coming from now. I can defintely respect you picking up on that. It was not my intent to come across as neoliberal. Like the word 'efficient', it has encoded ideological communication. I can assure you that it does not come from a neoliberal position. The problem is trying to replace the word 'enhanced' with something else - everything seems to 'feel' encoded

@thomkennon@mastodon.social avatar

@easysociology @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite Yeah I get it. The problem for me (see Foucault) is the apparatus. We cant think outside it. The presumption of having a "police" is never challenged when considering solutions to social problems. In this case I might argue the carceral state is the generative engine for gray and black economies. The taxing, regulating and monopoly protection apparatus comes with a for-profit incarceration industry. Cops are money - and cops bring dearh.

I had a feeling you would go with the 'think outside of having police' angle :) But yeah, i generally agree with what you're saying. Please remember though that these are beginner articles. Your comment reminded me of another article - although it's health, I wonder if you might find this article interesting from @SociologyMag

Thx & yes I dig the complaint at the heart of this essay on the NHS. Its insights as lines of attack (choice, theft, death, ignorance etc) are strong and compelling.

Makes me realize, again, that the real problem isnt the ascendancy of reactionaries into positions of power, it's late capitalism.
Capital determines State is perhaps a clarification of the actually-existing fascism at the heart of all neoliberal systems.

@thomkennon @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite @SociologyMag

Absolutely - couldn't agree more. Capital does indeed determine state. As for late capitalism (or at least late neoliberalism), you can literally feel it in the air - the trampling of the poor, the spread of war, the return of victorian disease, the inverted reality created by media, the masses hating each other, and so on.

Hollah all that, comrade... this is why I've turned to the hopeful activism (and happy delusion!) of anarchism and mutual aid in my later years. Go prefigurative or go home! :))

@thomkennon @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite @SociologyMag

Maybe the happy delusion is all we can do to ride it out :)

@thomkennon @easysociology @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite @SociologyMag I got disillusioned by anarchist ideas by observing how in my area of org studies more freedom just repeats policing systems under a new name. It's a bit like classical role/system theory, where society has certain functions, and when they are not provided society will be dysfunctional, i.e., puts stress, unfreedom on the individual. Maybe a police force together with social workers regulating power.

@roman @easysociology @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite @SociologyMag
Yeah I started out 50 years ago as a suburban white wanna be revolutionary and fell in with mostly MLs in SF and over the years drifted across the spectrum thru liberal left and finally back to happy if deeply skeptical anarchist. During the George Floyd uprising here in so-called New York I was absolutely re-energized by the shared desiring production of a bunch of queer, black, trans, brown, anarchists.

@roman @easysociology @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite @SociologyMag
But yeah, back to my original noise: all cops are bastards because capitalism determines the carceral state. At least for me, abolition is a primary prefiguration of a federated world of self determining (and thus self policing) socious.

roman ,
@roman@sciences.social avatar

@thomkennon @easysociology @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite @SociologyMag I am all ears. But when the revolution comes, we should make sure to not recreate the existing structures under a new name.

@roman @easysociology @sociology @academicchatter @academicsunite @SociologyMag
Yeah totally. The beauty (and simplicity) of becoming-anarchist is we behave now as though the world we fight for is already here. At least for me, that world has no political parties, or states, or central banks or private property. These models for self-determing federation are actually quite ancient. Indigenuity is my humble brief!
