I'm invited to be jury of a #PhD thesis in #Porto 🇵🇹 which defence could be attended either in person or remotely. I find a decent route by #train from #Marseille 🇫🇷 , via #Madrid 🇪🇸 for a total of 4 trains to reach the destination and about 2 days in the train / stations, both ways for 2 days in Porto.
Regardless of the cost,, and considering the potentiel benefit in terms of exemplarity, would you attend in person ?
@AlexSanterne@academicchatter It depends a bit on the relation with the PhD candidate. If I followed her/his work rather closely I would take the train, if I’m just on the jury to fill the list, I would follow remotely.
@AlexSanterne@jknodlseder@academicchatter I would go there. Days on the train work very well for me if I travel alone. I can work as focused as in the office (or even more), so it feels more like a normal work day, only that I am somewhere nice at the end.
@AlexSanterne
I think you know the answer already. 😃
And I'm pretty sure it will be also a better experience for the candidate, in particular if you have the chance to talk to him/her in person before the defence. @jknodlseder@academicchatter
@AlexSanterne@academicchatter I'd attend virtually, because it's very tiring to travel that long and because it's not absolutely necessary to be there. My2cts
