That link doesn't work for me, so incase anyone has the same issue... [Project Orion](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_(nuclear_propulsion))

Trick is to add a backslash before the two closing brackets, like this:

The API changes. I use Sync, and not being able to use Sync made Reddit more or less unusable for me on my phone. I also fundamentally disagreed with the direction Reddit was going. So, Lemmy it was, and it's great. And now there's Sync for Lemmy, which is even better!

Because it'll make look Trump look heroic?

That was my first thought too, because Trump is a horrible, vicious fuckwit, but now I'm not so sure.

The photographer's job is to document what happened, and this does that. On a purely aesthetic/journalistic level this is a hell of a photo. I don't think it'd be right to delete it just because of how it might get used later, or by whom.

I hate, hate, HATE that MAGAs will make this iconic, don't get me wrong. But the photographer captured a major news event, while literally under fire (albeit the shooting had just stopped) and I think that deserves respect and recognition.

Correction, most of those haircuts are awesome. The one in the middle... not so much :-)

There used to be (probably still is) a subreddit called Tombstoning that has stuff like this. I wonder if there's a Lemmy equivalent. Will go look.

EDIT - sadly not as far as I can see.

Advice on whether to get a contracted job or not

Basically, I currently work in a digital cinema company as a helpdesk for them and the job pays ok but is pretty stable as my colleagues have all been there for years. I have an interview soon for a FAANG company to be on their IT Helpdesk. It’s a job that will give me a lot of good experience, but it is a 6 month contract...

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

As someone else said, if you back yourself to get something else later then it could be the right move.

Only thing I'd be concerned about is the idea that they snuck the contract thing in - it would depend exactly what you mean by that, but if they were trying to conceal it from you then that might be a bad sign. If it was just a miscommunication or whatever, then hopefully all good.

Good luck, whatever you do!

PS - forgot to say that I quit a permanent job to go freelance and it's been a big improvement in my life. I work from home, make a bit more money, and can be much more flexible. Downside is less income security, and as a result less favourable terms on things like mortgages. Also, I have been lucky that I basically get regular work from a small agency and have done for a number of years, so I rarely need to go hustling for clients.

Nice one, sounds like you're all over it 👍

Good luck!

As a 40+ person, I strongly agree with my young colleague here.

Listen to what you want, kids. Enjoy it. And don't let anyone tell you you're wrong about it.

As Common once put it, "If I don't like it, I don't like it, that don't mean that I'm hatin'."

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Indeed, but this particular sub-thread started with an OP giving advice to older people, and is now older people responding to that comment. These aren't top level comments, so let the conversation go where it may.

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Disagree, I think 2001 is perfect. Yes it's slow, but that's intentional, it's part of the feeling of the film.

Modern standards don't really apply, because I don't think anyone nowadays is trying to do what Kubrick was, nor (obviously) was he trying to live up to any standards of future movie making.

Each to their own of course, but wanted to put a friendly counterpoint :-)

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Ghostbusters.

Stage manager? I'm not one myself, but I used to work in a theatre, and those people earn their money for sure. It's an amazing talent to keep everything running so smoothly, and it rarely gets the credit it deserves.

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I think you're thinking of On the Beach by York

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

True - I only pointed to York as OP asked for 2000s trance :-)

@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Best kind! :-)

I hope Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Three 'n One mix) is on there?

sanguinepar ,

No worries! 😁

@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Absolute banger.

See also the Paul van Dyk mix of Binary Finary.

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, an absolute cracker. I'm currently digitising my entire record collection (vinyl) and sticking it on Plex and I'm discovering so many tunes if forgotten about!

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I don't follow you, sorry? 😁

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, gotcha 👍

I wasn't planning on making them public tbh, but we'll see 😁

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

I've nothing I especially want to add to this at the moment, but if anyone has a project they want sporadic help with, let me know :-)

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Cool, no problem, stuck 6 reds down just now and will keep an eye on it and add more as and when :-)

    Who cares if people call it "woke"? The kind of people who would get themselves in a tizzy over that sort of thing aren't worth bothering about, and they certainly shouldn't be pandered to.

    If you have a story to tell, and characters to present, then tell it and present them your way, no matter what others think. Be true to your own creative instincts, and be judged on them, rather than trying to fit what others will accept.

    The Telegraph was my guess too. I support voting reform, but it's hilarious to see people/Tories whine about it now.

    It'll be interesting to see what the Lib Dems do now, since FPTP has absolutely catapulted them forward now. Hopefully they'll still advocate for PR.

    sanguinepar ,
    @sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

    Agreed in general, but I think 'Prime Minister Starmer' is fine tbh, when used by non UK media and people generally.

    What are your favorite bands from more obscure, lesser known countries?

    After a best mate of mine introduced me to Fela Kuti's works I've been real interested in hearing music from other cultures you don't hear much stuff from. Doesn't have to be traditional music styles (love it when genres and cultures fuse together, like Masayoshi Takanaka taking influence from Brazilian music), but I'd love to...

    I'll need to check that out, sounds good. In return, I'll recommend the Beginner's Guide to African Funk, a 3 CD set full of absolute gems.

    Great thread this, loads to check out.

    I'll recommend Songhoy Blues from Mali, and Gaspar Nali of Malawi, both excellent.

    Idi Amin was Uganda! ;-)

    Yep. I have on several occasions had dreams about my phone having been taken over by malware or similar, the homescreen being changed to be full of junk apps, and being unable to uninstall them or take back control of the phone. Not pleasant at all.

    Here you go - DAGA:

    https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/7d660a39-b011-4a82-a208-66a33cec7a71.jpeg

    An X aong the top means don't play this string for this chord. A circle means play this string without any fingers on the frets. And obviously a numbered circle on a fret means put that finger in this spot.

    It's fairly simple to do those chords (and I suck at guitar, seriously), and they sound nice.

    Hope that helps and you don't chuck your guitar :-)

    EDIT - just realised that that's not even how I play G or A - same fret holds but I use different fingers for them.

    I only ever saw that Royal Family video of his, and it was enough for me never to seek out any more.

    sanguinepar ,

    I haven't, but I will definitely watch that, thanks! 👍

    Another exception: Archer

    sanguinepar ,
    @sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

    Isn't she just doing that to try and stop Steve Holt from being attracted to her mum instead of to her?

    I don't think she was trying to get people to be nasty to her particularly, just trying to distract Steve.

    sanguinepar ,
    @sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

    Yeah, fair enough. It's not a joke that has aged well, certainly.

    sanguinepar ,
    @sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

    Homage maybe, but not a spinoff :-)

    @sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

    Ha ha, fair enough, I admire your determination to make this rule stick!

    Another counterpoint though - Quincy ME. Oh course you could argue that it's not all that good even with Jack Klugman's crime solving coroner.

    Oh, another one - Father Ted!

    sanguinepar ,
    @sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

    Veronica Mars, Ironside, Chuck...

    Arguably Fawlty Towers too?

    sanguinepar ,
    @sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

    Ha ha, fair enough. I see I've met someone as stubborn as I am ;-)

    sanguinepar ,
    @sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

    I'm not that knowledgeable on either, but if I remember rightly you also have the choice of watching the TV Show as it was broadcast in the USA or as it was broadcast in the UK (and maybe elsewhere) - the main difference being that the USA one has a laugh track added.

    I may have some of the details wrong, but just FYI.

    sanguinepar ,
    @sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

    That's what I thought, but really? Of all the cities in the world, the top two are 50 miles apart in central Scotland?
