Only real reason I use fennec over mull is mull by default has a fingerprinting setting that, while being better for privacy, locks the app to 60hz and my phone supports 120hz. If 60hz doesn't bother you then I think mull is the better choice. But they're really similar at the end of the day

Afaik he's always been independent. I think he ran with the democratic party for the presidency, but unless I missed something he's always been independent with his senate position

I agree it shouldn't be the ESA's responsibility. However as it says in the article:

In 2023, the Video Game History Foundation revealed 87 percent of games released pre-2010 were currently not preserved in any capacity. Attempts previously made by the Library of Congress were halted by the ESA, which said it'd rely on publishers to take care of those efforts themselves.

So the ESA have made themselves the problem by halting such attempts

I'm unfortunately away from my 3ds until very late the night of the 7th. Hoping I can get mine in before the deadline 🙏

I'll leave this stickied until the servers shut off on the 8th, 4pm PDT.

Important note, you do not need a modded 3ds / wiiu to do this.

However, from my experience, if you do have a modded 3ds, the process is really quick, and I highly encourage doing it. If your 3ds already has universal updater, and is connected to the Internet, downloading the tool and running it takes like 5 min. The tool also uploads the data for you, so once you run it, your job is done!

Thank you DreitonLullaby for bringing this to attention!

On the one hand, there is definitely a part of me that thinks it's kinda neat that a f2p game with not super predatory monetization has gotten so much support for so many years. I'm well aware that around Lemmy people think any monetization is bad but tbh fortnite really doesn't do it that bad. It's all cosmetic, you can earn most of the currency by playing and advancing the battle pass. It's not the worst example out there. The game is very accessible and can be totally free if you want it to be

At the same time I have 0 interest in fortnite or any other live service game. I hate that live service games have a tendency to remove old content over time. Give me a live service game that's fun, doesn't have fomo, and isn't predatory with micro transactions.... I guess that's kinda helldivers rn which I am enjoying but we'll see how it shapes up as time goes on.

Overall, it's bleh news because it just reinforces companies continuing down this path of a model that encourages lost media and nickel and diming you for everything...

Washington Strippers Win Bill of Rights ( inthesetimes.com )

The campaign’s primary focus for the new law has been on improving dancers’ working conditions especially around expanded safety regulations. Strip clubs in Washington will now be required to hire full-time security guards, add keypad locks to dressing room doors, and conduct sexual harassment training for all employees....

chloyster ,
@chloyster@beehaw.org avatar

The alcohol sales part of this is really big. WA was the last state in the country afaik that didn't allow strip clubs to sell alcohol. This rule change could have a huge impact on the money strippers make in a positive way.

Because clubs couldn't sell alcohol, they tried to make their money by taking part of the stripper's tips at the end of each day. Strippers wouldn't be employed by clubs, but instead would be independent contractors the clubs would use. The strippers used to have to pay a set amount of money at the end of their shift no matter what they made in tips. This could lead to them losing money on the day if it was a bad day. The bill addresses this directly by making it the lesser of 2 options between a set amount or a percentage of their tips. But the alcohol rule could also see this done away with entirely now that alcohol sales will be part of the equation. Although I doubt the tip percentage collection will go away entirely anytime soon, it's a step in the right direction.

The lewd conduct part of this is also a big win for the queer community at large, as it changes the rules that was allowing cops to raid queer bars in Seattle for bar tenders having a nipple out.

Yep!!! This provision was added in response to the raids so a huge win indeed!!

I understand how you feel. But you have to keep in mind:

Mario Maker 1 requires a creator to beat their level in order to upload it to the servers. The creator did not beat the level, so it's an "illegitimate upload" (as team 0% is putting it).

It definitely seems possible to beat, but for team 0% goals, I understand the decision

chloyster OP Mod ,
@chloyster@beehaw.org avatar

Well I suppose it depends on your definition of cheated 😛

It's true that the community did not know a tas existed until today. So really only 1 actual tas (that we know of) was made. There were however a lot of glitches (and I believe some hacks) that made it into levels that either: got deleted by Nintendo from the servers, or became unbeatable due to the game getting patched and the glitch no longer being possible.

A slightly unrelated but also interesting point. A ton of levels that were uploaded to the game were deleted by Nintendo. The reason being that in Mario maker 1 only, Nintendo would delete any levels that didn't get a star (equivalent to mm2's "like") after 1 month being uploaded. The numbers that the team 0% discord reports are:

Total remaining uploaded levels: 10,610,412

Total ever uploaded levels: 68,550,789

So, nearly 60 million levels that were uploaded were deleted

Yeah I'm kind of puzzled by it too lol. I wish they had just kept their original solution of using Macs to run iMessage. Perhaps if they had gotten popular it still would have been blocked, but their whole strategy of being super open about it is odd. I suppose they thought they could fight it but evidently that wasn't the case.

Overall though I agree with the post, the app is really nice, the new android version is super slick and if they can get all the other connections working locally like they want, it'll be even better

chloyster OP Mod ,
@chloyster@beehaw.org avatar

The second video with ThaBeast explaining the level shows the creators upload video yes. The level creator must beat the level for it to get uploaded to the servers. So in this case uncleared means a level
not cleared by anyone other than the creator.

Well I successfully cancelled my pledge and got this response from the ACLU. Reads very PR-y to me and not sure how to feel about it

Thanks so much for reaching out and sharing your concerns.

The ACLU is a free speech organization, at heart. We wholeheartedly support labor unions, the right to organize, the right to free speech, and with it – the right of workers to criticize the organization. It only makes the organization stronger.

We are gravely disappointed by recent press that suggests otherwise, and we are working with them to address mistakes in coverage.

The first collective bargaining unit in ACLU headquarters was established in the 1970s, and we have had a productive, decades-long relationship with that union. We voluntarily recognized our second collective bargaining unit in 2021 without any opposition. ACLU management values its workers and provides essential benefits to employees, including a living wage for the lowest paid staff members of more than $70,000.

We are not challenging the NLRB, nor are we challenging the authority of NLRB’s General Counsel. The NLRB website now contains the accurate legal document to reflect this.

I want to assure you that the ACLU’s integrity remains intact.

Please know that we greatly value your partnership and hope that you continue your critical support of the ACLU.

Is there a good place to ask for tech support on Beehaw?

I'm having a really specific problem trying to play a game with my friend on fedora linux, and the internet seems to hold no wisdom for me. Can I ask for tech support here, or on the gaming community? I'm used to reddit where posts get deleted for being off topic, and often asking in a specific community is also considered off...

chloyster ,
@chloyster@beehaw.org avatar

Gaming mod here. We're pretty lax on being on or off topic. Your post would definitely be welcome on there, and I imagine on the technology community as well!

I was going to make a simple brick breaker kinda game in GB studio. Turns out that engine is really good at very specific kinds of games, and trying to do anything outside that involves some serious engine tinkering.

So instead I decided to spin up a GBA dev environment to make it. Obviously a lot more involved than the drag and drop interface of GB studio but the homebrew scene is pretty large and there have been lots of tools made to make it easier. Mainly I wanted to make something I could play on my analogue pocket. GBA seems the best choice now

chloyster ,
@chloyster@beehaw.org avatar

GB studio is a really cool engine. I definitely recommend checking it out. I haven't done much with it, but it's a great option if you're looking to make a platformer, or top down adventure game. Extrapolating to code is a bit... Lacking unless you are a fan of assembly haha. There is little to no code writing involved in GB studio, and when you do have to do some, it involves using the GBVM custom assembly language.

I have heard of game jams :) I did the GMTK 2022 game jam recently. It was a lot of fun! Definitely would love to do one again

A good move that is in pretty stark contrast to the current Seattle leadership's goals. Glad people on the state level are trying something here though

The article says that often during development they'll put in simple text to speech stuff for characters as a placeholder. I'd imagine to make sure certain audio hooks work and sound isnt broken
