Have you not seen how big number can be? Number can just get so big. I don't even care that I'm ADHD and I'm playing into all the worst stereotypes about us:

NUMBER GETS BIG

Come on. Few people are as angry with our society as it stands as I am but the United Kingdom is fit to burst with amazing cultural heritage which we should share with the world (some of it we didn't even steal!).

Furthermore, for as regressive and bigoted as a lot of our media and politicians are, a very large proportion of British people are tolerant, curious, and kind-hearted.

The United Kingdom is much more than our current and historical governments. If we are ever going to establish ourselves as a force for good in a worsening world, we need people to realize that we genuinely are more than Brexit, Rwanda deals and Partygates.

Getting the Tories under 100 seats at the next GE and encouraging the Labour party to not be afraid of being a tolerant, democratic socialist party are the first steps towards that.

Truth or Consequences, NM

Heard it on a true crime podcast once and obviously I had to look up how it got its name and now it's just stuck.

EDIT: Missed the never travelled to qualifier. I've been to California twice and NYC once. Only heard of Truth or Consequences after my travels.

Like all reasonable people interested in linguistics, I'm a descriptivist. However, something about the idea of language being adapted to cater to an algorithm turns my stomach.

I know it's hypocritical. The Attention Economy shouldn't be any less valid a linguistic influence than the Norman Conquests, just because they occurred a millennium ago.

I genuinely think we're lucky in Britain that the soft power we have (for the time being) has prevented our culture being entirely supplanted by the United States.

An Ethicurean. I genuinely believe it's the perfect cocktail but I've only ever come across it in a single bar in all my life.

  • Serves 1
  • ice cubes
  • lemon ¼
  • thyme 2 sprigs plus 1 to serve
  • honey 1 tsp
  • vodka 25ml
  • apple juice 100ml

Full recipe.

Just going to take the opportunity to point out that broad (not universal) historical consensus is that Jesus of Nazareth existed, was baptised by John the Baptist, and was then crucified. It goes without saying that Jesus being the Son of God, Messiah etc. is not the broad consensus.

WatTyler ,
@WatTyler@lemmy.zip avatar

It is. Furthermore, as an atheist, I don't feel like believing in the existence of Jesus compromises my position any. On the contrary, I've confused a few less-informed Christians by telling them that I believe Jesus existed but I don't believe he was divine.

Besides that, stories like the Nativity seem to pretty much just be myth.

The Wikipedia article has a pretty good summary.

Essentially, we have non-Christian sources claiming he existed from only a few decades after he died. Furthermore, no ancient critics of Christianity argue that Jesus didn't exist. Then there are aspects of the story that you'd assume early Christians wouldn't want to make up. This includes him being baptised by John the Baptist. It's a little embarrassing for the alleged Messiah to be baptised by someone considered to be a normal dude. Sure Christians have kinda retconned its significance but if you were making it up whole-cloth why would you make that part of the story?

Similarly, the crucifixion. Try and take your mind back 1900 years. Crucifixion is a humiliating punishment, designed to shame criminals. If you were creating a mythical figure, in that time, why on Earth would you have him die that way? It doesn't make much sense. To suppose Jesus is a wholly mythical figure is necessarily to suppose he's an invention. Sure, maybe you could make a compelling anti-hero from the crucifixion story but you want to be fabricating the world's first universal religion. Why make your job harder by so closely associating your so-called Messiah with a method of execution often associated with petty thieves and brigands?

WatTyler ,
@WatTyler@lemmy.zip avatar

I mean correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think I said any different? All we are reasonably sure of is:

  1. He existed.
  2. He was baptised by John the Baptist.
  3. He was crucified.

However, any non-Christian who claims that Jesus of Nazareth was a mythical figure, as the original commenter did, discredits all of us non-Christians who find it ridiculous to believe that this man was the Messiah.

I'm honestly curious as to what sort of evidence you'd like to see? By the standards of ancient history, Jesus of Nazareth is a reasonably well-attested figure.

"The superintendent responsible for the city centre personally discussed the incident with the officer and made it clear that her actions were unacceptable and must not be repeated.

"She, along with other employees, received refresher training on how to deal with similar situations in the future."

I have no words.

Can someone explain to me what Reddit's costs are supposed to be? It's not like they have to pay licences for things like music or have to host insanely large media files. Their content generation and moderation is free. For a long time their website was barebones and they didn't have to make an official app. I can never even recall them advertising until recently.

Sorry for my delayed reply but this was exactly the explanation I needed and I'm grateful for the effort you put into writing it.

Yet another moment in British politics that has flooded me with anger and upset, followed by despair that there's nothing I can do to rid us of malevolent, hateful bigots like Rishi Sunak.

WatTyler ,
@WatTyler@lemmy.zip avatar

For Brianna's mother's sake, I'm relieved that Sunak used the correct pronouns when he spoke about Brianna at the end. However, what does it say about Sunak and this bullshit, culture war transphobia that he did use the correct pronouns for Brianna?

The whole thrust of the attack was to imply that Starmer doesn't know what a woman is but then when it's convenient, Sunak tacitly agrees with Starmer that Brianna was a woman.

I'd almost have more sympathy for Sunak if I thought he was a misinformed transphobe. I resent him more because I don't believe he genuinely cares, like some do. I have never had any reason to believe he thinks there is any problem with trans people. Yet, he is willing to endanger the lives of these beleaguered, threatened innocent people, for what? For the fucking Conservative and Unionist party. A reprehensible institution that has done infinitely more damage in the real world than any trans person has caused in the most batshit, unhinged nightmares of a Mail Online commenter.

Subtract x from both sides of the equation. You get 2 = -2 which is incorrect and nonsensical.

I used a VPN and was able to purchase the $1 tier via PayPal and redeem the books to my Kobo account. When I was redeeming the code, I had to manually set the webstore to the United States. The books were added to my main Kobo library alongside everything else I own in there.

However, and this isn't a big deal for most, you will receive the American English 'prints'. Terry was so quintessentially English, it feels uncomfortable reading 'Color' of Magic rather than 'Colour'.
