Fuck that traitor. I'm not sure how he isn't facing charges.

MagicShel ,

Okay, but why would I give a fuck if it were true? Trump sure as hell is going to be. Let's see whose best is better.

I said in 2020 I'd vote for a ham sandwich if it was the only alternative to Trump. If Biden is a coked up vegetable, I'll so vote for him over Trump.

MagicShel ,

It makes sense. I'm pretty sure I'd be a total asshole if I were rich. No worries on that front, though. I'm not going to be rich. Ever.

MagicShel ,

Look at our current set of lawmakers. Many of them are unserious people and you can't take what they say seriously. Which is why we should endeavor to stop electing them.

MagicShel ,

I don't care what fucking color everyone is in 1000 years. We should all just fuck each other to end race once and for all.

MagicShel ,

We need like a global swing/orgy day. All monogamous relationships are suspended once a year. Only requirement is they can't be the same skin color unless both are... ethnically ambiguous.

There, we fixed population collapse.

"No! Not like this!"

MagicShel ,

I've been trying to explain to my less enlightened family for years that requiring a trans man to use the women's bathroom only makes it easier for men to just walk in since having a beard and a dad bod no longer means you have to use the men's room.

These laws just don't make any sense and can only make whatever they are afraid of (men hearing their wives and daughters tinkle, apparently) worse.

MagicShel ,

Your dry sarcasm leaves me parched. I'm here for it.

MagicShel ,

If you don't have enough people to win the war by picking up pens and voting, you definitely don't have enough to win by picking up guns and shooting.

MagicShel ,

If they lose by less than the margin of Covid deaths that's going to be hilarious. Until they realize that it was a conspiracy all along and they were tricked into not masking.

MagicShel ,

No. You're going to have to walk me through the thought process that led you to ask that. My whole point is if you can't win through voting, don't try to start a war because you aren't going to win that either.

MagicShel ,

Spicy mustard. Yellow is acceptable for chili dogs (only).

As a general rule, I don't eat ketchup. My wife and kids love it, but I rarely have it. I normally eat my fries with nothing but some seasoning salt, but thick steak fries demand vinegar.

MagicShel ,

Al's problem is the woman's complaint was clearly performative, but there was no way for him to say that without relying on the rhetoric of rape denialists and victim blamers. If he had fought back against it, he would forever be invoked in both sides arguments.

That's the downside of being the party of empathy and human dignity.

MagicShel ,

I’m guessing too young to say a print the name.

Just a suggestion. I interpreted what you wrote differently than I think you intended.

MagicShel ,

I'm not going to insist that what you wrote is wrong, that would indeed be pedantic. I'm just saying that a casual read of that sentence indicates something different than intended and I suggested that perhaps a clearer version might be cognitively easier for some folks to read.

Downvotes obviously disagree so that's fine. But it certainly wasn't intended as pedantry.

MagicShel ,

I get it, but the fact that Wiener was later convicted of sending obscene materials to an underage girl really undermines your point. It's pretty obvious in hindsight that he shouldn't have been in a position of power and influence. There are things that can be overlooked - but actual crimes that could create a conflict of interest or leave someone vulnerable to blackmail cannot.

Should he have been forced out in 2011? From the perspective of say, 2012, there is a good argument against it, but 2015 demonstrated that it was, in fact, the correct call after all.

MagicShel ,

Wow. I read that as ozone laser and was super confused.

As a new, one year, software developer who retrained late. How do you know when you're ready to apply for a new role with more money?

As the title states. I’ve been a software developer for a year now and work for a tiny company, where the salary isn’t amazing. I got paid more at Apple Genius Bar, but it wasn’t as challenging....

MagicShel ,

The problem with small shops, and I have a lot of experience here, having spent my first ten years in a development shop where I was the only developer, you need exposure to other environments, other ideas, other technologies and frameworks in order to grow.

I would be looking for other jobs right now. It might take a while in this environment (I've got 25 years experience and been out of work for 3 months, so it's rough finding a job now) and you aren't going to really grow while you're stuck where you are, unless you are learning from an expert in a lucrative niche (and that's still dangerous long term if that niche dies - I spent half my career on Lotus Notes and worked hard to redefine myself as a Java dev).

If it takes you a year to find the right opportunity, it's best to start now, right? That said, you're a junior developer and it takes probably 5-8 years of experience to become a senior dev and command a reasonable salary.

MagicShel ,

A good work environment is extremely nice. But there needs to be a pathway to getting the big bucks. That might be a worthwhile conversation to have with your boss - what he needs to see from you to get promoted. Arm yourself with average salary information and ask what it will take for you to get there. And in a small company that might not be totally in your control. Could require a certain amount of growth or whatever. But if you have a great work environment and a great boss I suspect he'll be open to that conversation.

MagicShel ,

They aren't mistakes in their eyes. God is just cruel. Gay people and trans folk and people suffering from birth defects are just supposed to have worse lives.

"What can I say except, 'you're welcome!'"

- A loving god

MagicShel ,

Local and state elections also matter. Watching Trump deal with a Dem Congress might even be amusing. But yeah, vote Biden because Trump already fucked up the Supreme Court enough.

MagicShel ,

I was around during Ross Perot's independent run. If he didn't win, no third party had a chance. Ross was extremely popular his first run and when he ran his little whiteboard presentations, a huge number of people watched because that was the most entertaining and relatable show on TV. He drew viewers from both parties. He got 19% of the popular vote and not a single electoral vote.

All due respect to Bernie, but he wouldn't have touched Ross's numbers just because you can't have that kind of reach any more. Third party just can't win.

MagicShel ,

I'm not going to address your question, but I will say I married at 23, divorced at 30, and married again at 37. And I'll tell you I didn't know what real love was until I married my second wife. I have 5 kids now (3 step) and while life is far from perfect, I'm pretty happy with what I've got.

I can also tell you that your projection of your own lack of self esteem is incredibly unattractive. Learn to love and enjoy yourself and the rest might follow, but until then I can tell you that the way you talk about yourself presents a person that would be very difficult to enjoy being in a relationship with. Your defeatist attitude just sucks any kind of positive energy out of the conversation. You don't have to change that and there is no guarantee of reward if you do, but you should probably acknowledge that you are in fact choosing to be far less inviting than you could.

MagicShel , (edited )

I joined the army for no reason other than I didn't know what the fuck to do with myself. Hell I could've had a free ride to college if I'd known what I wanted to do.

So it is from the perspective of experience that I will tell you, the quality of our military will plummet when absolutely no one gives a fuck about being there. There were gung ho motherfuckers who really wanted to be in the army and they were good soldiers. Then there were those of us who were just there to fuck off. You don't want 100x as many of those. The military would just be absolute garbage.

MagicShel ,

I'd mention the one about giving daughters to be gang raped, but honestly I think that would just reinforce current behaviors. I think the collective meh would be more horrifying than the quote.

Movie Trailers Are Killing Movies ( www.gamespot.com )

A great movie trailer can single handedly turn a movie into a success story--like that genius Cloverfield trailer in 2007 that didn't say what the title of the movie was. But it's more common these days, I'd argue, for a trailer to have the opposite impact. A generic trailer can so thoroughly dampen hype for a film that...

MagicShel ,

I don't know if I can put my finger on a reason besides cost, but I just don't want to see movies in theaters any more. When my kids do, I'll take them, but I have no problem waiting 2 months for them to show up on streaming when I can buy them for $20, 1/5 or less than the cost of a movie date with my wife or taking all four of us and getting drinks, candy, and popcorn.

Cheaper tickets, a decent lounge and bar with bar food instead of theater food would help, but there just aren't as many must-see movies any more. I feel like blockbusters used to be maybe 3 or 4 a year, but now everything is epic and so nothing is.

I want to see Furiosa 100%, but it's nothing I can't wait a couple of months to see. Which kinda makes me sad because I used to absolutely love going to the movies.

My point is I don't think it's the trailers. I think audiences are more fickle.

MagicShel ,

This. Man, the best movie I've seen in the theater in a long while was Everything Everywhere All at Once. Low budget, original, entertaining. I had zero expectations going in and loved the movie. More like that, plz.

MagicShel ,

When I do go to the theater on opening weekend, I prepurchase tickets with assigned seats. But I'm trying to think of the last movie I did that with and I can't remember. Probably Avengers: Endgame. Was Star Wars: TRoS after that? I don't like to mention that one because I hate that movie so much I refuse to acknowledge it exists, but I did in fact see it opening weekend.

MagicShel ,

When I was a young teen, I watched my grandparents' neighbor die of a heart attack in his boat. He leaned over - I thought to get a life jacket or something - and his boat just kept circling backwards. Not much to say. It took the ambulance over an hour to arrive. There was a very small pool of blood, maybe 2-3 inches in diameter, on the floor of the boat.

That's it. Nothing exciting or traumatic.

MagicShel ,

When I was growing up, the big fears of Gen X were another ice age, over-population, nuclear war, and quicksand.

So I'm not sure what Gen X has to offer. But we're here if you need us - like if global warming causes a quicksand crisis. Otherwise we're just gonna keep doing our own thing.

MagicShel ,

I'm an eloquent motherfucker, but I don't have sufficient words to express my contempt for Trump. I still don't think I could ever consider assassinating him to be justified.

My question is, isn't this conspiracy to commit murder?

MagicShel ,

Redefines synthetic data generation? From "making fake data" to what? (I get it, it's hyperbole.)

Training on synthetic data is the most garbage-sounding thing I've ever heard. Isn't Reddit and Wattpad fake enough? At least those posts were generated by actual humans.

I guess I'll wait and see, but I'm really skeptical that this will be a good thing.

MagicShel ,

Health experts say the gambit was indefensible and put innocent lives at risk.

I'm no health expert, but this is really just obviously true.

MagicShel ,

Anyone who is worried about this feature is in a toxic relationship. And that's not the phone's fault.

MagicShel ,

No. I 100% understood the sarcasm. Did that sound like a rebuttal or argument? It wasn't intended that way.

MagicShel ,

I use Linux as my daily driver and I still don't understand half of what people say when they talk about Linux. I support this idea. Not because I have dumb questions, of course, but I think everyone else's would be very educational....

MagicShel ,

I will. It's mostly the conceptual stuff I need to grasp the context. Me and Google "how to grep" or "how to install .deb files" are old friends.

MagicShel ,

Particularly where he limp-wrists it and breaks his wrist.

MagicShel ,

I saw a video about AI girlfriends, which people definitely think they have right now, and it pointed out that they are just you reflected back at yourself through a funhouse mirror. And that strikes me as being a very apt explanation.

So could you be your own friend? Your own lover? If that's not satisfying to you without AI, I think you'd find AI to be just as shallow and wanting.

MagicShel ,

Have you ever heard of teledildonics? I guarantee if there was a demand, you could eat that. It could be programmed to respond to where and how fast you perform. It would be multi-functional so you could enjoy the devices in other ways.

I agree with your conclusion, but not your reasoning.

MagicShel ,

Oh I missed your reference! Nice!

MagicShel ,

How about a bot that just instantly fact checks and replies every time he posts anything. We could potentially prevent the lies from getting half way around the world before the truth gets its shoes on.

MagicShel ,

Captain Marvel?

MagicShel ,

I'm sure you're right. I was just being an asshole in good fun.

MagicShel ,

Does it ever occur to anyone to just say, "that doesn't make any sense and is probably a distortion"?

MagicShel ,

I don't come here for the far left. I come here for the lack of the far right. The far left are some crazy nutters, too, but I think for the most part they are well meaning and that's a damn sight better than the far right who just wear hatred on their fucking sleeves.

It means I get some shit for not wanting to live in a big city or being happy driving a car, but I take solace in the fact that I'll be long dead before far left ideals take hold in any significant way. Meanwhile... fascism is a far more immediate threat, and that's the one group of fuckers I give myself leave to unabashedly hate.

MagicShel ,

This. But also my apps stopped working and I have let the tv update every once in a while.

MagicShel ,

Imposing a harsh punishment in this situation, even if warranted, would not be seen as unbiased. The fallout would be intense. I'd be most concerned about the perception of those folks who don't really pay attention to politics. Will they refuse to vote for someone who's been to jail on a felony, or will it offend their sense of fair play and make them vote for "the underdog"? The sentence, whatever it is, has to be a 4D-chess move by the judge.

I really don't think it'll be jail time, but I'd love for it to be and more importantly I'd love for the election to bear out that choice.
